Some interesting posts on Danny How Is Brodie going thread I don't know how to transfer them across to here can anyone help.
I think Danny has lots of class and will get his chance soon and be a handy midfielder.

On Stanley I don't get why everyone seems to think he won't make it just from the Carlton game where he got caught twice, people say he lacks awareness but every player will get run down sometime, Marty Clarke got run down 3 times against Fremantle in Round 1 for an example. Stanley may not be the fastest player but he also ran down Gibbs against Carlton, he wouldnt be any slower than say O'Bree or Burns and he performs the same role, a clearance player.

People saying his skills are a worry is bemusing as he is probably one of the best kicks in the VFL side. People have written him off after one bad game where he injured his ankle and had to play on it for the rest of the match. I have high hopes for Stanley and believe he just needs a chance in the midfield in the AFL.

He also has elite (and I use the word deliberately) handball skills. He's lightning fast with his clearances by hand and his effectiveness rate would be the highest in the two's. (It actually is in the seniors too but off limited games obviously). He's also a reliable strong mark and can take a hanger. On Sunday he deliovered a 40 metre handball onto a team mates chest.

Then there's this - he is the only young player who is genuinely tough, who has a real physical presence on the field and who can genuinely intimidate the opposition - just ask Setanta O'Halpin and the Frankston Ruckman he ironed out (legitimately) on Sunday. And check the mark he took running 30 metres back into the pack.

Hmmm, he can kick, mark, intimidate an opponent, win the clearances and average 25+ possessions a game - sounds reasonably skilled to me. I suspect that if any of Dyas, Thoolen, McCaffer or Dawes was piling up his performances, we'd be talking them up like the second coming. For whatever reason, this board marks Danny very hard.

And by the way, he ain't slow. He's a big strong framed boy and he's never going to look like a sprinter but he's in the top 10% at the club in acceleration over 30 and he can move fast when he has to. Don't forget, he's got to do all the midfield muscle work and run all day with that big frame so he sensibly doesn't run everywhere like a rabbit. He tends to lope between contests but as a couple of other posters have noted, he can turn it on at need. And in the Carlton game, one of those run downs was a result of a suicide handpass from a seniot player who should have known better.

Unfortunately, a lot of Bigfooty opinion is derived from other Bigfooty opinions, some of which have no basis in fact.

He will play, and he will play midfield - when the space is there. He obviously isn't a better player then Burnsy yet so he equally obviously isn't going to push him out yet - but the time will come, and instead of crying "woe is us, we have no tough in and under mids", we'll have Stanners right under our noses!

PS If you want to check his handball skills in particular, have a look at his draft tape on Dave the Mans youtube thread - awesome.

Big fan of Danny. A lot of people have him marked for delisting at years end, citing the last uncompromised draft as a reason to cut deep. I reckon it works both ways, as it's the last real draft for a while, i think it's important to HANG ON to young players who've shown a bit, rather than throw all your eggs in one basket.

I think he still needs to show more but I wouldn't delist him either. If he can improve some more, he has the sort of hard body we need in the midfield. I'd give him another year to prove himself.

Agree 100 percent with you Rupert. I am a huge fan of Stanners and I seem to be defending him continually against the no brainers that post on this site.
You are spot on with your summation. He is a quality player in the making.
I have said it before but I will repeat myself. I believe he was captain of the under 15's Country team, co-captain along with Joel Selwood of the under 16 Vic Country team, All Australian and went to Ireland with the elite and played well in the under 17's, played in the under 18's Vic Country. Great credentials if you ask me!!!!!
He is very tough and hard at the ball. His work off the ball is amazing something you get no stats for and if you are not at the game you don't see or hear about it on the radio Last week he knocked down and held out two opposition gathered the ball and cleared it while sitting on the two opposition players. Not bad.
One other point he is rated 10th for speed in the club so obviously no that slow either!!!!!!!
I say go Stanners and stick it up the knockers. Hope you get picked soon.

Would be pretty disappointed if Stanley got the chop.

IMO all he needs is a few weeks in the 1's to show a bit and get used to the pace of the game.

Stanners was drafted as a grunt type player.

You can't come in as an under-age kid and play immediately as a grunt player against grown men. He'd get smashed.

It will be his 4th year next year and I expect him to start receiving a spot in our mid-field rotation as that grunt player.

Remember we already have 2 pure grunt players in Burns and O'Bree and he is not going to get a game before them. I think you can only have 2 of these types or your midfield becomes too slow. Swanny also picks up a bit of this work.

I'm hoping he becomes a Sam Mitchell type player. From recollection it took Mitchell a few years also to establish himself. I stand to be corrected though.

Great post , I too don't know why stanley is marked so harshly I suspect it stems from him in defence a position he should never have played in the 1st place.
He has always been an out and out midfielder but MM's "everyone has to play defence" has hurt Stanley imo, if he gets another crack at it he should get game time in the center not back or HFF where he went ok but was in a loss so didn't get much opportunity.
