going to have to, had bought the ps5 before the Bethesda buy out happened unfortunately otherwise i would have gone straight for xbox in the first place

It'll pay for itself and the PS5 in the long run.

Once I get the xbox I'll play all new releases on that via gamepass and just use the PS5 for my main MP games and exclusives.

Some juicy leaks (rumors).

Rebuilt physics engine. No more tying physics to FPS. Finally!

When I read this I found it so hard to believe lol. In other engines you do your physics calculations by delta time for that very reason. Surely that was a thing in Creation Engine!

Creation is an old ass engine, I doubt delta was standard when it was made, at least for single player game engines. And now that everyone wants to run games at uncapped frame rates, or at least above 60, it's too late to patch in. Hopefully Creation v2 is real thing.

It's just a multiplication to calculate the time since the last frame though. Physics things that are calculated per frame, like putting movement in the Tick function (UE) or Update method (Unity) you just multiply by the delta time since the previous frame. In Unity that's as simple as something like Vector3.forward * Time.deltatime. I understand some console exclusive games back in the old days were tied to the frame rate which is why their PC ports were troublesome or frame rate capped, but it's still hard to believe that software designed to create games on multiple platforms wouldn't have a delta time function within its framework. Not to say that this isn't the issue because there is plenty to suggest otherwise, but it just seems like such a bad practice that it's hard believe.

Looks like this is going to have a marketing budget equivalent to Cyberpunk, hopefully hits the mark a little better, can't help but get hyped.

He's the first part of what I assume will be a lot of marketing material:

I'm fascinated by what the monetisation system of the game will be. Huge acquisition costs, huge development costs - $15 per month and goodwill only goes so far.

I'm thinking it will be something of a stripped down base game (compared to Skyrim) with many purchasable DLC quests/planets - rolled out at a steady pace over several years. This keeps people on Game Pass - but also paying for DLC. Generally speaking, Bethesda DLC is quality and usually worth the $ in my opinion.

At worst, possibly single-player microtransactions or paid mods?

Microsoft recouped the cost for purchasing Bethesda the quarter after they bought it, they don’t care about the money.

Think about how big Microsoft actually is and you can see why.

Microsoft have more dough than anyone else in the gaming sector. My hope is they start pouring it into these devs they have brought and push the quality of games up

It’s one thing to pump money into the studios, but managing that many studios is going to be the tricky part. The embracer group have a similar model where they own heaps of small devs (THQ Nordic etc.)

I’m hoping Xbox have basically bought the studio for exclusivity and are letting them run themselves.

I've been following Microsoft since the early 90s - I know how big they are - and why they are so big. Namely, their ability to generate a return on their investment.

On the face of it, Game pass would not be generating a significant return yet - given that they have to fund development of multiple AAA studios and pay third parties as well (who have reportedly said they do quite well out of Game pass). Microsoft sell their Xbox consoles at a loss - so they are not picking it up on the hardware side.

This is uncharted territory so I'm interested in what the strategy is for Microsoft. Do they try to generate a positive return through the next few years through some combination of:
  • increasing the price of gamepass,
  • decreasing the quality of third party offerings,
  • make up the loss on the development of 'free' base games with a tonne of purchasable DLCs/microtransactions

Alternatively, is Microsoft willing to use its more profitable divisions to subsidise the gaming division for the next few generations - as a way to wipe out the competition - then look at ways of generating a more substantial return?

I don't think it's that complicated, Microsoft see the size of the western gaming market (given they lack any presence in Asia) and would figure 100,000,000 Game Pass subscribers is something they could reach. Given they're currently at about 25m without a lot of big hitter exclusives in the last few years.

At $15 a month that's $1.5 billion revenue a month or $18b per year.
That might seem like it's an unobtainable amount of subscribers, but with Xbox, PC, mobile, streaming and potentially Nintendo or other avenues in the future it's not out of the realms of possibility.

Netflix spend $100m++ on single movies or movies with big name actors, they never make a profit, but are constantly spending and bringing in massive revenue which may or may not be sustainable, but it's working.

A lot of those are gaming enthusiasts who play many games a year and derive great value from GamePass (especially those who converted 3 years of Gold for $1) or those who resub for $1 with each promotion.

During the last generation, the average console gamer bought 2 games per year - and usually not at full price. Microsoft is banking on streaming/mobile gaming, studio acquisitions and the concept of GaaS shifting the habits of the average gamer - in order for GamePass to become a widespread value proposition.

I mean that’s the way it looks. Think they may have learnt from the Bungie/343 experience when it comes to single player games.
