There is undoubtedly some amazing un-tapped talent around the state leagues which could add to depth or fill a hole or two. A mature ruckman and a small forward would be perfect.
Adding mature players to our rookie list was smart and I think we should look to the state leagues to do the same thing this year

interested in the boards thoughts on Michael sikora - currently the ruckman for Essendon VFL side - has only been playing for a few years and improving quite rapidly - only 24 and showing a fsir bit of upside

Boom and there's who I was hinting at in my previous comment.

Edit: Damn it I made the comment in the Blair Hartley thread.

Cain, O'Hara, Suckling. Suddenly the midfield is solid.

Hows Brad sewells brother going? Apparently been killing it for years and havent been picked up. Would be great to add 2-3 mature age players this year like 21-24 year olds like Barlow, Mzungu and Hibberd. Would be great for our team.

I like all of them. Not sure any will be first team players though. Solid depth players but should we be trying to get young guys who may turn into a good player or just aim for back-up quality. O'Hara is getting to an age where you have to wonder what's wrong with him to not have been picked up. Maybe a bit slow? Not sure.

He's too skinny. Has a really thin frame for an inside mid

Do we have any names to look out for? Just get another mid from a state league also maybe a KPP and a ruckman unless we get Lycett.

Sikora as mentioned above by shankd it would be my favorite that would fill a need. 206cm and close to 110kg I believe. I think he comes from a bball background. Exciting prospect.

Sam Gray from SANFL as a small forward maybe. Draft young mids for mine. Our midfield is looking bloody good and state leaguers won't get much of a look in.

Maybe a Michael Lourey as a KPF. Haven't really seen enough of him though.

Geez it all seems so simple in this thread. There's plenty of examples where it's been shown that some of these players aren't playing AFL because they simply can't adjust to the higher standard

As for throwing guys on the rookie list, it seems a great idea in theory but consider this. A 25 year old bloke is dominating over in the WAFL, he's started a family, got a solid job, roots in place. Is it worth it to pick up everything, take a pay cut and move to Victoria on the outside chance that he could become a fringe AFL player? I'm sure for some it probably is but I don't think you guys are taking any of this into consideration.

Huh?... they nominate themselves!!!

How do they know they can't adjust to the higher standard if they are not given the opportunity?
Re your WA example, sure, its not for everybody to go onto the Rookie list. No-ones forcing him to. Its just getting the guys that want to give it a crack.

Surely a 206cm 110kg 24yo prospect would be a much better option to Orro and Derickx!
I wouldn't be at all deterred if he came from a basketball background (especially at towering at 6"8)!

I'd say so. He's developed a fair bit this year. Hopefully he'll still be available as a rookie pick.

Honestly, if no one else is available, or someone like a Warnock, Hampson or Hille's asking prices are over inflated, then why not rookie a 24yo beanstalk who is still young and could potentially offer quality back up to Ivan!

Yep, unless we get Lycett or something I've firmly planted myself on the state league approach for a youngish ruckman. Much better chance of a high payoff for minimal lay out than trading an early pick for someone like Longer who (probably won't) but could end up a dud, or only as good as someone we could pick up for peanuts in a state league

I think even if we did get a young guy like Lycett or pick one of those other guys you've listed I'd still rookie him. Just stash him on the list. Eventually someone will want a ruck and trade for our rookie. Or we get a gun no.1 ruck and we tell them to **** off. :p Payoff can be big by rookie listing a ruck.

That's a fair call. Rookie list him (at least)! Who knows, Sikora could prove to be a massive coup for minimal outlay.
Good followers are difficult to find, even some first rounders (such as Cameron Wood) have not lived to their potential, unless somneone like Nic Nat version 2 becomes available. Then it's a no brainer!!!

How about Myles Bolger from South Fremantle?

Nominated for the 2011 draft and Knightmare (does some ripping phantom drafts, on the Phantom Drafts sub-board.) has him as a potentially high level AFL player. This was his writeup:

Myles Bolger (WA - Ruck)
Height: 201cm, Weight: 95kg, DOB: 25/03/1993
Recruited from: South Fremantle Football Club
Style: Darren Jolly
Player comparison:
Range: 10-55
Profile: Fantastic tap ruckman, gives mids first use consistently and taps to advantage. Around the ground also very good. Strong mark overhead. Skill level very good for a ruckman. My main concerns are that he doesn’t really jump in the ruck and against bigger or more athletic opponents he might struggle. Not a super athlete and given current lack of size will need to bulk up all. Also has had injury concerns - foot. But 1st round quality ruckman. Give him time because he has essentially missed 2 years of footy.

Would be 21 at the start of the year and potentially become a very good AFL ruckman.
