My issue isn't with the team being based out of WA, it's with there being 20 teams. The quality of the bottom 10 teams this year was fairly ordinary; with expansion it'll only get worse.

It's an extra 88 (4 teams) AFL quality players required every week above what we have right now. Where are they going to come from?

yep i agree with this. you look at all of the players delisted at the end of this year, guys like head, gilmore and JON... they are horrible AFL players, yet are genuinely good wafl vfl players. if we have 20 teams in the comp, these guys would not have been delisted even though they are well and truly sub-par players weakening the whole comp

The A-League has gone backwards this season after expanding from 8 to 10 teams.

On this point, I still can't believe they expanded it before the league was proving itself as viable.

Wasn't the old NSL abandoned because of the diluted talent due to the amount of teams balanced with the amount of interest? I am a massive soccer fan and was really getting into the A-League with the 8 teams, this season I really couldn't care less, I watch the glory but have a little interest in anything else.

A 19 game season playing everyone once would be a lot fairer than the current set up though.

Fairer yes, the overall standard of games would be a lot worse though. All the teams would have depth equal to, or worse than Fremantle's this year. Until Queensland and NSW are producing a quality/quantity of talent equal to that provided by WA and SA as a minimum, further expansion is going to be a bad move.

we need to build a proper stadium first.

Fully agree with this as a priority. After a few years overseas I can't get my head around the fact that we are still playing in that dungheap of an arena.
Also agree with Mundys sentiments in regards to expansion being an inevitability, but please get the facilities right first.

Would it mean Fremantle and West Coast had to play one game home, two games away?

Knowing the way things usually work the WAFC would probably lobby for the eagles to get their home games to themselves while we have to share our home weekends with the new team.

Andrew D is a dick.

The AFL needs quality not quantity, with teams like North struggling does he really want to dilute the competition to the point where there is 1 team for every 10 people in Australia?

With huge doubts over West Sydney and some over Gold Coast, he should be looking to consolidate for the next 15+ years or move a couple of teams out of Melbourne.

Perth does not need a third team, the Dockers are still building and trying to establish an identity for themselves and dont need another team to steal their thunder.

He is getting too full of himself and needs to be replaced.

I voted ‘no’ for two reasons:

1. We need a new stadium before a new team
2. We don’t need another Port/North Melbourne in the AFL

I was just playing devil's advocate. ;)

I for one wouldn't mind having a 3rd WA team in the AFL but can't see it happening for at least another 15-20 years. Port Adelaide was the last team to enter the AFL if memory serves me right and that was in 1997. It took the AFL 11 years to decide on another team to enter in the Gold Coast and by the time they were to enter the AFL officially it would have been 14 years. Then theres team GWS and they are meant to enter in 2012. So the AFL would then leave it alone for 10-11 years and see how the two new clus are going. They would at least have to be as successfull as Port were in making finals and Grand Final within the first 10 years. So were looking at 2022 when the AFL would possibly think about introducing another team based on how much success GC and GWS are having and wether or not these clubs make a profit or are continually losing money. In my opinion Tasmania is next to be granted an AFL license and then they would look at a new team in WA. All other states would be discounted for as Sydney, Queensland would have two teams, Melbourne would have ten, bearing in mind that no team relocates and Tasmania would have one team. SA would be overlooked because of they fact that they get poor crowds at the moment but things could change. Therefore WA with both our teams having 40,000 plus members and a good bunch of young players and a growing population would look to have a 3rd team. Were there based no body would no, but I am sure that they would get terrific support, maybe from people who like football but the eagles or docker's arn't their cup of tea.

There is a lot of water to go under the bridge forst though, before we can even think about having a new team in WA we would need to get and 70,000 - 80,000 seat stadium built preferably sometime before 2016. I no WCE have a waiting list for their membership and I'm not to sure about Freo. Freo would also have to win their first premiership or maybe 2 or and while their not doing that at least be a regular deep into September. WCE you would think would at least win 1 or 2 more premierships in the next 10 - 15 years aswell.

If their was a new team in WA they may be based in Mandurah, which is an hour out of the city ala Geelong. However though I canlt see them getting massive numbers of 40,000 people to there games and also the goverment building a new stadium for Freo and WCE and then a replica of Skilled stadium in Mandurah somewhere.

:):)

Not against a 3rd team here that doesnt bother me if they can gain enough support and it wont end up like melbourne, nth melbourne port etc then sure go for it.

But as i said too many teams brings the overall quality down makes the game less skilled and less attractive to watch on tv.

English cricket has far too many teams thats why the quality of players going around in that system is pathetic.
A league is now facing the same problem.
Rugby Union in Australia is going to get even worse quality players running around in the super 14 series if they bring in another team as already there isnt enough quality going around to fill the current teams.
And whats happening its ugly to watch, the teams are going crap and crowd numbers DOWN.

We arent in america with a population of 300+million so we cant try an have as many teams as they do in american sports.

12-15 AFL teams is more than enough for a population of 20+million
Each team plays each other twice, 1 home the other away.
24 round season or 30 round season with no preseason comp cant get much fairer than that.

And if anyone gives up playing football due to travel they were never gonna make it as a footballer in the first place as it takes more than just skill to make it.
You need to be dedicated and determined if there scared of by a little bit of travel geez they better hope there not good enough for AFL.

I had a fair bit of skill as a footballer i just was never dedicated enough to get anywhere.
I didnt wanna give up partying , late nights, drinking plus i wanted to work so i had money to do stuff.
If i gave all that up an committed to football i think i could of made it to WAFL level.

Too many teams = lower quality league which makes it less attractive to viewers and will do more harm than good to the growth of the competition.

Get rid of/merge a few melb teams
Give Tas a team.
Then if they need extra teams to make it 15 theres prob enough support for a 3rd team here.
Dont have the facilities to even look after 2 teams here though so dont worry bout a 3rd.
