Very good question.

I'm certain we will go for one or the other, but we supporters are pretty much in the dark right now.

The club hasn't given any real indication of which one they will choose, whilst the issue has been rather contentious amongst supporters over on the other Geelong Messageboard.

There are some that would love Carl Steinfort back at the club, whilst others are vehemently against him coming back, stating that he isn't worthy of a spot on our list.

It shall be an interesting week.

Does either player have a "true" position ?
I'm not sure that either players would be a good addition for the Cats because they are only likely to hold back some of the youngsters if they were to get a game.
Decent players when fit but you might be better to bring in another junior player.

Regardless of who we draft, they will be the designated 38th man on the list, who will, more then likely, be considered as nothing more then a top up.

I can't see either being a long term threat to any of our promising kids.

Totally agree with those comments.

Whoever we draft may fill a role should we have injuries and suspensions next season but I doubt they'd get a regular senior game ahead of our any of our talented youngsters.

I'll open a can of worms here...

Suppose Cameron Ling is injured, or suspended. Do we have a true "tagger" that can spell him?

In that case, get Steinfort.

As long as we're building depth at every key position, that would seem to be the next step forward.

Plus, Steinfort's experience of having just played in a finals campaign at Collingwood might prove invaluable in the eyes of Mark Thompson, in terms of finding an influence upon the squad's younger players...

Cheers,
William

A half forward who can play in the midfield in short bursts.

He has a big body, Cameron Ling-esque in size.

We don't need Steinfort. It would be two steps backwards for us.

He quit because of the demands of his new business, and he didn't feel like he could dedicate enough time to Collingwood at training, and he knew it would cost him a position in the side.

Therefore, the solution isn't for a team 80km away to draft someone who can't committ to training around the corner. What does that say about the club?

Besides, he is too slow, and struggled for the majority of the year. We have plenty of tagging options, they just don't know it yet... Rooke, Harley, Enright, Corey, Rahilly, Wojcinski etc are all capable of it, they just need to be given the chance.

Steinfort is a player that has just played in 3 finals in a team that just made the Grand Final. You're saying he'd be number 38 on your list even though he was in our best 22 come September time.

And let's not forget his game on ANZAC Day, when in my opinion he should have won the medal.

Sometimes I wonder. :o

Hoggy, he was deadset lucky to even play in your finals and spent the majority of the GF on the pine.

He was good on ANZAC Day, no doubt but that was his one decent game for the year. When the weather brought everyone back to his pace and skills.

I was never a fan of his when he was at Geelong and it would be a step backwards for him to return.

Ling isn't just a tagger, he does not play that position every game because we have other options, as Scarlett Pimp has mentioned. James Rahilly is an excellent tagger who really came of age this year and he can fill the tagger's role easily.

Even still, wouldn't a little added depth at that position (or any other, for that matter), and especially someone with a veteran's experience, be the goal to build for here? Point being that Steinfort would be a good option, albeit in a draft lacking true depth, to have should Ling and/or Rahilly get hurt or suspended.

Shipp, as I mentioned before the weekend crash, would provide us with more versatility, but Steinfort can provide us with more immediate depth as well.

However, I'm afraid that Thompson must build up the depth at some of the key positions-- or else the Cats will suffer the consequences. We were quite lucky with our lack of injuries last season, and especially when we were winning and winning well. Yet the odds of that run of luck carrying on for two seasons on the trot is rather slim, and in all honesty, either player would serve a means towards the end of that goal of building more depth in the side. But if I had a choice right now between the two players, I'd still say Steinfort, although Shipp wouldn't be a bad option, either. We'll see what transpires in the draft...

William

From today's age
Geelong coach Mark Thompson said the Cats were yet to decide whether they would punt on a kid or a player with AFL experience.

He said if they did select a seasoned player, former tagger Carl Steinfort - delisted by Collingwood - was a chance to be taken, but added: "It's more likely we'll pick someone who hasn't played before."
If I was betting, I'd say 45% chance for Steinfort, 10% chance for Shipp and 45% on the rest

In the Grand Final he played on Des Headland and pretty much beat him, you must have him mistaken for Jarrod Molloy or Leon Davis.

It was not his [one] decent game for the year, in the finals series he beat Roger James, Kane Johnson and Des Headland in 3 successive weeks, that shows how the man can play.

Perhaps it would be a step backwards to get Funky, but it would be the same step backwards that you took last year by recruiting Aaron Lord. :o What's the difference?

The recruitment of Aaron Lord has set the benchmark for the re-recruitment of Funky.

Shipp is still eligible for the Rookie draft.
Chatfield has to be given a go in my opinion he has done nothing wrong in the VFL.

Lord has more versatility, he can play as a forward or be thrown into the midfield if needed. Steinfort is a tagger, he's no midfielder like Riccardi, Ling, Clarke, Corey, Enright etc. and hasn't shown anything that would suggest he can play anywhere else.

it sounded like they were going for another untried kid, or someone with very few games under their belt.

With only five players taken in the AFL pre-season draft, Geelong opted to select Brent Moloney – a local youngster from the Geelong Falcons – who recruiting manager Stephen Wells said was almost picked up in last year’s National AFL Draft.

But after representing Vic Country in the 2001 under-18 championships and attending last year’s draft camp, Moloney was injured during this year’s nationals and was overlooked in the recent National AFL Draft.

"We're very happy with Brent and we seriously considered drafting Brent in 2001 and as it turned out, we were able to fill our list with other players and then this year we were very pleased to be able to be able to pick up Brent in the pre-season draft," Wells said.

"He's a player who's played strong footy for the Geelong Falcons for a couple of years – mainly on the ball and on the half-forward line."

"He's a powerfully built young man and he's also played well for Vic Country in the under-16 level in the national championships and then in 2001 he also played for Vic Country in the under-18 level, a year young, but this year he missed the championships because of a leg injury at the time."

"But Brent's had a very good couple of years with the Geelong Falcons and we’re very pleased to be able to draft him."

"He did have a couple of reasonably serious injuries over the course of the year and fortunately he’s over them now and he should be ready to go with pre-season training when we come back after Christmas."

So... no Shipp and no Shinola! (or whatever that stupid joke was)

Spot on, at that. Glad you remembered it... that was my intent. ;)

Nice move, though, to get Moloney. Although I would have preferred to have acquired a player with a bit more experience, such as Shipp or Steinfort, for example, it's nonetheless another young player who will be given the chance to develop and bring more depth to the squad.

Cheers,
William
