Steve will be a very good player but he willtake time to develope his body.
His kicking is not in the Luke Hodge class but he is better than Dawson.

I'm guessing DTM knows everything about Stevey G. So telling you what kinda player he is is pointless.
I haven't seen him training or playing. So I can't really comment at the moment.
He's a rookie, so he's unlikely to get any games. Lets just hope he gets a lot of it for Sandy.

Care to elaborate a bit Roughie? Doesn't spot up targets, is an unco kick, ball comes off as a mongrel every time, ball kicks him back it was that shocking...

I would suggest H2R knows Gaertner personally, because no one that doesn't would defend his kicking. That said, he's very athletic for a big bloke and can take a nice grab. Richo can't kick and has those attributes...

I know him and would suggest that anyone who has seen him play and simply comes away from the game to say he can't kick and nothing else about his game hasn't watched him properly. He is not a great kick but makes up for this with being a good mark, has unmatched pace for a 200cm player and a leap that anyone would die for. I suggest going down to Sandy on Friday night to see him before judging him by what people on BF say. please blues2010, to say that i haven't seen him play by the observation that he "can't kick" is silly, especially when i reckon i've seen him play 3 or 4 times at moorabbin.
And every time i walked away thinking, he can't kick. Which he can't. Doesn't make him a bad player, but he cannot kick.

He has only played a practise match for Dandy at Moorabbin. You are a goose mate. Let people see him play and make their own mind up. You have only read the garbage on BF by people who also haven't seen him play. I am not saying he is a good kick but you make it sound like he is a terrible kick which he is not. It is not his strength but he has more strings to his bow that other players can only dream of

Over the past couple of years, I would guess that I have seen Steve play about a dozen or so times, and he has improved out of sight since the start of 2007. His kicking can let him down at times, but when you run like him, and stand at 200cm, i'm sure you can excuse him some clangers there.
He's a terrific kid, and will bust his nuts trying to improve and work his way onto the Saints' senior list.

If his skills are close to that of CJ, he'd be awesome! He's an athletic freak, good at everything but disposal, which would still be better than everyone on here...

He won't play AFL football this year.
Probably a project for 2-3 years down the track.

Lol just cos I went to school with him doesn't mean I went down to watch him play for the Dragons every weekend.

Good thing about that, because he played for the Stingrays.
I quite like Steve Gaertner. He improved a lot over two seasons. He's always had fantastic athleticism, but you're kidding yourself if you reckon he can kick. He is simply not good at kicking the football. He'll damage in other ways though. His combination of size and speed is quite exciting. He used to have a bit of a habit of running himself into trouble and it was still there a little bit late in the 08 TAC Cup season, but his awareness improved greatly. He'll be a little heart in mouth at times, but they're the fun ones.
Definitely a project player. Could use a bit more muscle - but there aren't many 200cm 18 year olds that with an AFL build anyway. With a bit more bulk and some experience in senior football you'd be hoping for something in 2010 from him.

Oh well if he can't kick he probably will only end up as good as Lenny Hayes or Robert Harvey.
