I've been one of his staunch defenders in the past...

It has come to a time where he has got to re-assess where he is at. For a player who has truckloads of talent, he really does do some questionable things...

He could well be trade-bait one day, but he is teh type of player taht when he gets his act together, he could come back and bite us on the behind.

Thoughts?

His ankles are stuffed.

If you can get a 1st rounder for him, I'd do it.

For sure he is frustrating as hell, but in a very even team he's one of the few players who can be a matchwinner. If we lose a few more games then maybe they should concentrate on getting him right for next season, like Collingwood did for their stars last year. Get the ankles fixed up and let the guy have a great pre-season.

After being under the pump for not doing the team things, I think SJ is finding it hard to find the balance between when to give it off or when to slot it though himself.
Generally does more good than bad in games and I think will just keep improving.
Definitely worth keeping in the side.

It's a confidence thing IMO.

When he is up and running, he probably wouldn't even think about passing that off.

He needs to go by instinct, first option. At the moment, he is umming and arring and by the time he makes a choice he is gone or has made another mistake.

From what I've heard, the ankles are beyond full rehab work. The days of Dog playing at 100% for 22 games a season are gone (if they ever existed).

Disagree.

I suppose you could pull it off as a 'positive', in that he is still thinking twice about selfishly getting his own or passing off (it's been evident since he came back from the VFL), but the balance is missing. Nothing to do with confidence, but everything to do with a brain.

You may want him to go by instinct (which I'd argue is looking straight at the sticks close to 90% of the time), but isn't that the one thing we were crucifying him for a few weeks ago?

he's a dimwit.
Someone answer me this... Why the :D:D:D:D do our forwards mark within kicking range and try and chip the ball around the forward line? If we were dead against the boundary line...ok maybe it would have some merit, but losers like Kingsley and Johnson can be right in front or on a slight angle and all they want to do is pass it off!! Is the club offering 'goal assist' bonuses? Would Ablett or Brownless have ever done that? Even David Mensch and Brett friggin Spinks have enough brains to realise that when you're in kicking distance with the opposition flooding your backline YOU KICK THE BASTARD OF A BALL AT THE GOALS!!!!!!

Poor Johnno, even he does not know what he is going to do next, handpass to Milburn covered by 3 players last week, stupid, stupid, stupid attempt to pass yesterday both goals would've steadied the ship...
ANKLE OPERATIONS MUST HAVE SUCKED OUT "BRAIN FLUID"

I get the feeling with him that he was pee'd off for being dropped for not doing the team things. Now he is doing the team things at the wrong time as a sort 'see, I was right in the first place' type payback.

PEE'D OFF? , if he did the right thing he would not have been dropped. I'm not sure if he can play the game mentally, his amazing goals are too infrequent to make up for the basic mistakes. I'm sure his body is not up too it anymore, he should play in fwd packet next to FF and crumb

I'm sick of hearing about how he could be a matchwinner, and if he got his act together, he could give us the spark we need. Maybe he has talent, but when you see him do stupid thing after stupid thing, you start to wonder. Yesterday, he came close to losing the game for us with a stupid error, rather than winning it with a bit of genius. The ABC commentators referred to it as a bit of "smartarsery". I'm sick of his "smartarsery" costing the team. The times come for an extended spell in the twos, and if we can get anything worhwhile for him (though I doubt you'd do better than a second round pick if you're lucky), seriously consider it.

Possibly, but there's a strong link between brain - confidence in my view.

Interesting points though GeeCat.

You are correct. Wasn't doing the team thing and passing it off - dropped. Comes back in, tries to do team thing and stuffs it up. I could see he half hesitated to pass it off, he's almost confused and was thinking too much about with to be selfish (which he should have) or done the team thing.

If there is any lingering problem with his ankles he should be rested for the remainder of the season (that goes with all players with problems, Colllingwood example). I find it hard to believe that with the miracles of modern medicine a cure for a broken ankle (of a 23 yo) cant be found. We have few elite talents he is one. Tip him out for the year, the new coach will want to work with him. Get him to AA as well.

Bulletproof. Talent yes. But unfotunately Steve just doesn't have what is require to be a top class footy player - a brain. For every freak goal he kicks he makes twice as many mistakes. Cut our losses. I agree give him the rest of the year off...in fact give him the rest of his career off. It was his stupidty that did his ankles in-enough said!
