I know for a fact we were very interested in Steve Johnson a while ago and we offered Geelong our first round pick #7 which ended up being #10 (Chris Egan) a couple of years ago, geelong declined but now they are looking to trade him for a high second-round draft pick, would we be interested now?, i would be very very happy to land him as i rate him highly, he just needs to get over the injuries and get to full fitness and he will be a star.

Ankles can be repaired. They are rarely career ending injuries.
According to Bomber in a pre season (may have been early season) interview on SEN he said Johnson will never be able to train properly and had to manage himself carefully. He played like it all year. I strongly suspect this is why they are offloading him. Stay away Collingwood unless it is a real bargain. If anyone else is interested it won’t be a bargain. Third rounder at absolute most. Preferably 4th round and a player(s) we don't want.

Didn't know about bomber's comments on SJ being unable to train properly ever again and needs to be managed. Ive posted comments saying 2nd rnd at best but i now withdraw my comments and say 3rd rnd at best. If they want high 2nd rnd it aint coming from us- he can go to ess. Plus with us rejecting the wce bid for tarrant and nobody prepared to deal on polak looks like Taz will be staying unless something dramatic happens so i agree even more of a reason why we shouldnt chase SJ.

From memory he did his ankles jumping over a fence whilst running from the police at a 21st, should fit in well at Collingwood :)

He is a matchwinner when playing well. I'd rather keep him.

We gave hawthorn pick 7 + Bo Nixon in exchange for pick 10 + 35 i think-( it was 3rd rnd pick anyway) which was on traded to wce for chad morrison

Oh that's right thanks.

It's a pretty good example of a pointless deal isn't it. A good reason not to trade just for the sake of it.

I think with Leon and Dids (after he regains full fitness) playing more in the midfield i think if we trade for Johnson who as shown he can be a matchwinner in the middle also we would have a very good rotation going.

I rate Johnson pretty highly, I think he has the potential to be a star if he can get his head right.

If we could get him in a mutually beneficial deal I'd jump at it. But what this deal would be considering his injuries is anyone's guess.

I do NOT wanna hear potential with this guy as well, ****ing hell, not another one. He is 25, if you arent a star at 25, Collingwood shouldnt give you a chance to become one, we have been screwed over enough in the past.

Actually S Johnson is 23, Freo trying to work a 3 way deal that sees S Johnson to Collingwood as well as pick 13 and using Medhurst somehow to accomplish it

Pick 13 & Johnson?

Hmmm...worth thinking about.

In reality, I'm to the point where I want us to trade Tarrant just to have another pick in the top 15. It'd make the next couple of months far more interesting!

To have a relatively reasonable chance at landing one or two of Selwood, Proud, Jetta, Collard, or one of them plus one of the second tier (for this draft) KP players such as Reid, McKenzie or Nathan Brown.

I hate the fact that Steve's got chronic injuries, coupled with the fact that we've got a fair few gifted flankers who may never play in the centre square. Admire his ability immensely though.

Whats your opinion now you know he has just turned 23?:D

Geelong have failed to go the extra yards in recent years. They have not even got to where we did in 2002/3. Quite a long way from it in fact. Their list – the talent and structure of it – is over rated. They are not a premiership contender they are a preliminary final hopeful with a good injury run. The reasons clubs don’t go far enough can be varied but fundamentally I don’t think their list is good enough. Part of that is players not performing at high enough levels when it counts. Johnson is a culprit and that plus his injury issues are why he’s being offered.

We don’t need their problems. We never addressed our own when we failed to go all the way and adding Geelong’s is NOT the answer. I’d rather punt of turning Medhurst’s career around and maybe upgrading the draft pick I presume Freo were going to exchange with Geelong in a Johnson deal – unless it was a straight swap. I’d rather sweeten a Tarrant deal with Freo and get their second round pick upgraded or something. I’d rather get Geelong’s first round pick in a 3-way with Freo. Obviously Geelong may not offload their pick but that’s a better strategy for us to work on.

We should be trading out Lockyer and O’Bree not trading in more players to let us down in hard fought tough games. Johnson has some talent but his ankle is bung and his attitude is not good enough to make him a star even without the extra he’d need if his ankle was ok. I certainly wouldn’t complain 12 months down the track if I was wrong because he does, as I say, have talent, but I just don’t think it is a good punt at all. Aside from that we have too many half forwards as it is. Our need is midfielders with pace and a ruckman. He does nothing for that. If we are to trade then make it for players we actually need.

Third rounder. It could pay big dividends if he is prepared to work hard, especially now Didak will miss most of the 2007 campaign.
The reality is, if Didak misses, we probably don’t have a 2007 campaign. I’m all for trying to win a flag every year but the fact is we aren’t good enough at full strength so minus Didak it is a pipe dream. On that basis this is a year to load up on picks and draft deep. Sacrifice depth for draft picks and we’ll probably get a double return with better draft position next year as a result. Johnson is counter productive in too many ways for mine.

All fair points

one thing i dont understand tho is that u dont really want s.johnson because he played for geelong and doesn't perform when it counts. He has played a couple of decent finals for the catters, and when fit and able to get a decent run of games together he produces.

Medhurst on the other hand simply fell by the wayside at freo, as soon as freo dumped him from the team they went on the big winning streak. Medhurst pulls off a big game at subi once a month and in between goes missing.

If our club docs reckon that S.Johnson will hold up to 22 games next year then he is worth our 2nd rnd pick, as his only issue is his body. Medhurst aint worth anything as he was shown to be holding freo back and only turns it on at subi anyway!
