There has been a bit of talk on the AFL board about Steve Johnson and Leigh Harding and who you would prefer out of those 2 players in our team and it prompted me to ask the Geelong people on this board what you think of Steve Johnson and his role in the side now and for the future??

Personally, I think Steve Johnson has the potential to be a very good forward for us for many years, not just a goal sneak mind you... he is 188cm tall and can be a 3rd or 4th marking option as well, which is hard to match up on when you're an opposition coach trying to work out who can play on someone like that.

It will be interesting to see how he goes in his 2nd year at Geelong. Johnson finished last season off really well and hopefully will continue on with that form this season and beyond.

What does everyone think??

Agreed, for the reason mentioned above.

But also, FWIW, I felt that Johnson showed a bit of versatility last season, not just as a marking option but as a player who hustles all game-long, is football-smart, and can be used tactically as a half-forward or midfield option as well as a marking forward inside the 50.

Very versatile player-- and while he and Leigh Harding will both be good players over time, and it remains to be seen who will be the better player, Johnson's a better fit here.

Steve Johnson has amazing scope. The kid could be anything, provided he is willing to work hard.

His rookie year was great, up there with the best mid-sized goalsneaks.

Very happy with Steve at our club. I think he will be around longer than Harding (personal opinion).
Was a little dissapointed with his kicking last week though.

Definitely. His kicking is usually outstanding, but i guess we can expect some rustiness given its only February.

That's exactly right.

The main thing at this time of the year is that he was getting into the right positions to get the ball... the finishing will come later.

I think he'll be an excellent footballer. Is one now!

Interesting that he gave Sam Power a bit of a run around in the second half. Power was taken about 15 places higher (no.10 overall) in the same draft and was a highly decorated junior but at this stage you would have to say Johnson has moved ahead. Hopefully for us Power will get his revenge in the season proper.

I think Thompson handles the young guns at Geelong very well. As good as any coach in the league. Good luck to the Cats this year.

I was desperate to get Sam Power back then and even now, i'd love to have him.

He's a slow developer, but in time, Sam Power will be a star.

No worries mate.

You've got an excellent board over there, save for the 'SMS girls'.
