It is clear that Steven Kings' football career is coming to a close. This is certainly no criticism of him as I am sure he is doing his utmost to get on the park. However he is now a liability - I read today that he is out for another fortnight with a calf strain. It is soft tissue injury after soft tissue injury for him - an indication that his body these days just isn't up to the rigours of not just 100 minutes of football but also the training required to achieve match fitness.

I think Steven and the club should think seriously at years end of announcing his retirement so the club can look developing a young player or consider trading for a ready made ruckman.

I remember Josh Fraser not playing much last year through injury. And look at him this year.

I know King is not much ATM but ruckman like him dont grow on trees so i dont think we should get rid of him.

Is this the Captains injury curse striking again. Maybe we should make Charlie Gardiner captain that will finish him.

Not too sure what Fraser's injuries were but ongoing soft tissue injuries to an older player does not bode well. If he stays on the list he should definitely have the captaincy taken from him (should have happened this year).

I was thinking a captain rotating policy with Charlie, Will Slade and Mark Blake....

Give the guy a break. He is coming back from injury. I didnt hear you say anything the week befroe when he was rucking beautifully against St Kilda. Coming off a smashing like last week people call for too many heads. He will be right.

I thought the same about Steven King towards the middle of last year. But he started to show some good form towards the end of last year. When he gets his body right, he's a crucial part of our team. But unfortunately thats about one game in every four by the time he does a calf, recovers, gets match fit, plays a good game, does his hammy etc. The rest of the time he's being carried. And how long can you carry a bloke who plays one good game every few, and the rest of the time does nothing but take up a spot on the bench?

I'm getting mighty sick of the sight of Kingy spending most of the game on the pine, when we could have someone else there who at least has the body to allow them to consistently contribute, even if they don't have the same impact as a fully fit King.

It's probably to early to make the call yet, but if the persistent injuries continue throughout the year, it's probably t ime to look at relieving him of the captaincy. Putting him up for trade or delisting him to draft someone else would probably do more harm to the club than any minimal benefit which would be obtained. I think it would be a case of gently telling him his days are numbered and slowly seeing him fade.

I hope I'm wrong, but it seems likely given recent history.
