ST KILDA ruckman Steven King will jump straight from the club’s playing list to its coaching panel next season.

King will retire at the end of this season and will immediately become an assistant to senior coach Ross Lyon.

No real surprise, but it's good to hear he'll be coaching next season.

Former captain of the club who played a massive part in the development and growth of this amazing group of players and got the ultimate send-off from Geelong. He will be remembered fondly.

Well done Kingy! :thumbsu:

Agreed, despite playing for one of our biggest modern-day rivals I still had a soft spot for him.. perhaps he has a very likable face?

Good luck to him and cheers for the years of service. :thumbsu:

AFL Premiership Player (the only player who will ever achieve both in the same year)

Steven King, I salute you. I think 200 games with a club is generally what a player needs to automatically qualify for Life Membership - King finished on 192. But if you factor in his pre-season games like they do for AFL Life Membership, that would probably get him over the line. Plus with the honours above, I'm sure they'd induct him as a HOF player, no matter how many games he played.

I seem to remember Bartel, Ablett and Wojcinski were inducted last year, Wojcinski probably for ten years service and Bartel and Ablett for a combination of games played and playing honours, so I'd say Kingy either already is in the HOF, or will be inducted next year.

Edit: forget all that, he's already in there: http://www.gfc.com.au/hall%20of%20fame/tabid/4010/default.aspx

How's this for a fact: until September 2007 King was only one of two All-Australians we had had for the decade.

Until 2003 he was a very good young ruckmen, named All-Australian at the age of 21.

One of my fondest memories was the game against Richmond at Kardinia Park in 2001. The game was extremely tight all day, with margins at the breaks of one, five and seven points. But in the last quarter, King drifted forward to kick four goals straight, and the Cats won by seven goals.

(Edit: Just noticed Ottens kicked six out of Richmond's 11 goals that day.)

Good luck Steven King - You will always be a Geelong Premiership player!

As for assistant coach at St Kilda, hope he doesn't learn their constipated playing style or he'll never be welcome back as a future coach.
