Not sure if the story has been confirmed but it has been reported here in the west that Stewart Loewe has joined Richmond in a part time role of ruck and marking coach.

Loewe joins Frawley's Tiger team

By Emma Quayle
November 06 2002

Former Saint Stewart Loewe is a new specialist coach at Richmond.

Seven years after they played their final game as St Kilda teammates, Stewart Loewe and Danny Frawley have reunited at Richmond.

Having spent the past two months settling into retirement, Loewe has accepted an offer to join his former captain at the Tigers as a specialist ruck and marking coach.

The Saints' games-record holder, who retired at the end of the season and has yet to develop an ambition to coach at senior level, will combine the part-time job with running his building business.
His decision to join Richmond was borne out of curiosity to see how clubs other than St Kilda, where he played 321 games and was a co-captain for three seasons, functioned.

Loewe would have remained at Moorabbin, despite being unsure about whether the club had an official position to offer him, had Frawley not convinced him to try a new team.

"I just decided it would be a good challenge to get out of the comfort zone and go and have a look at how another club was run," said Loewe, who discussed the move with St Kilda coach Grant Thomas before committing to the Tigers.
"There's some huge talent down at Richmond and I've said quite openly that there's two clubs that I'd love to go and work at, and that would be Richmond and St Kilda, just with the talent at both clubs with the young big guys.

"In the last couple of years, through injury and circumstance, I've had an opportunity to sit up in the coaching box and look after more things than my own game and I think that's really going to help me out.

"I've had some good ruck coaches over the years, so I'll steal some ideas from them, as well, and combine them with what we want to do at Richmond."

After St Kilda swapped Peter Everitt to Hawthorn in the opening days of last month's trade period, there was speculation Loewe was considering playing on next year to support the club's young and relatively inexperienced on-ball team.

But Loewe, who presented his No. 23 guernsey, to young Saint Justin Koschitzke in an impromptu ceremony at the end of his final game in round 22, said he was content in retirement and had not seriously considered playing an 18th season.

"I was always a bit worried that once the boys started training again, it was going to be difficult, but I'm not missing it at all at the moment. There's no chance of me ever pulling on the boots again," he said.

"It's going to be hard when they run out next year, but I've had my time and it's time to pass the baton to the younger guys. I'll be working down at Richmond but I'll certainly have one eye on the corner of the telly watching the St Kilda boys."

I don't agree with you guys. I reckon it's a great move. Don't forget that on his day he was one of the most damaging players to play the game.

Any tips and experience he can share with our guys can only help. Good Move!;)

I dont think its too bad. Bennys great and all but Loewe is just like Benny. Loewe had a fabulous career and will be a great ruck coach.

Its a joke. Jobs for the boys. The club is doing ok in recruiting and admin, its time that they appoint a professional coach. Frawley is an absolute dud, this appointment just confirms it.

I reckon as part of Benny 'retiring', he would have been given a job as a 'specialist coach' in order to smooth the financial waters!

Benny himself would now have bigger fish to fry, being near the end - or having completed - his law degree and aiming for a job in the corporate sector.

sounds like it chris and a bit from the age i think more or less confirmed this that benny has other interests next year.

cheers!

I've defended Danny Frawley as coach up to now, but this is too much. Surely a ruckman would be a better option for the ruck coach. And as for marking coach, what is Loewe going to teach them - How to grow huge hands?

From the AFL site:

"Loewe a coup: Hutchison

New Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison says the club has scored another off-season coup with the addition of 321-game ruckman/forward Stewart Loewe as a specialist ruck and marking coach. “It’s another positive step for the club at the moment,” Hutchison said.

“Unfortunately Brendon Gale, who did it last year for us, wasn’t able to do it again because of his work commitments.

Loewe was expected to be offered a similar role at St Kilda, where he played for 17 seasons, but Hutchison says his bond with ex-St Kilda team mate Danny Frawley was the clincher in making the move from Moorabbin to Punt Rd.

“Obviously Stewie’s relationship with Danny over the years is still pretty strong and to get a guy who has just finished in the AFL scene is a real coup for us,” he said.

Along with the Tigers’ other off-field ‘recruits’ Greg Miller (director of football) and Wayne Brittain (assistant coach), Loewe’s experience and knowledge will provide a significant boost to the club’s football department.

The Tigers’ spirits were also lifted by some relatively new faces on the track at Punt Rd on Wednesday afternoon – young midfielders Rory Hilton and Mark Dragicevic and key defender Ben Holland.

All three missed most of the 2002 season with long-term injuries and will be more than handy on-field ‘recruits’ alongside newcomers Kane Johnson and Justin Blumfield.

Hutchison said the re-emergence of the three added to the buoyant mood around the club.

“They have done it pretty hard the last three or four months, particularly young Draga and Ben Holland,” Hutchison said. “It’s good to see they are both progressing really well.

“Rory Hilton with that shoulder injury he had throughout the course of the year – it’s good to see him running and handling the ball really well again.”

The Tigers will give the opportunity for recently delisted players and VFL players to train with the club. Bill Nicholls (Hawthorn), Adam Pickering (Carlton), Dean Talbot (Coburg Tigers) and Lucas McGhie – the son of Richmond hard man Robert McGhie – will train with the club leading up to the pre-season draft. "

You watch, that dud of a coach will waste our first pick in the pre season draft on another mate:- Jason Cripps.
Hopefully this time next year we will have Sheedy as senior coach.

LOWE has had a long and distinguished career. Remember he has played in a Grand Final not so long ago......more that I can say for half of those currently at the Club.

Danny obviously knows him well and I am sure that he wouldnt have offered him the job if he didn't think he could do it....lets face it I don't think Danny is out to cut his own throat by employing Duds.

Lets give him a chance before we all start accusing people of Jobs for the Boys.....like it or lump it that is the way life work.....

Oh no - another "just you wait until sheedy gets here" thought.

The man has run his race - As much as i don't think much of frawley i would rather a guy maybe on the way up than a guy definetly on the way down.

how low can u go

well i feel that among the crap at kilda master lowe made a major name for himself and i rate him as one of footballs better players and he was unlucky as his team did get close to the flag.
the way i see it richmond could do a lot worse as he not only has formiddable ruck skill for a not so tall ruckman but could find the posts as well which we all know is footballs bottom line!

I would be very much waiting to see how it goes before slinging off at Stewart Lowe or Danny Frawley. So far danny has been the best coach we have had in at least the last 10 years..most likely longer....(thinking of the duds paraded through the club..)

The other thing, I would bet a lot of money that once Sheedy finishes at windy hill, he wont want to coach again. Why would he, hes accomplished 10 times what any other coach has in the last 50 - 100 years, apart from Jock Mchale.

As for jobs for the boys, I am sure that the last few years of Lowes career have not been a highlight, but he has been a great player over time. Dont let the fact that he played for another club cloud what he could possibly be.
