All is not lost!
Fremantle and Melbourne were the leading candidates to receive Hawthorn misfit Trent Croad and Geelong was firming to get Corey McKernan as AFL player trading intrigue continued.
Hawthorn fans protested at the club about plans to trade Croad. His ultimate destination was linked to what deal could be arranged between Melbourne and Fremantle for Jeff Farmer.
Fremantle was understood to be offering Hawthorn its fourth pick in the national draft in return for Croad, or pick one in return for Croad and fellow Hawk Luke McPharlin.
"We're in a good position because we've got two early draft picks and we've been negotiating around those picks with Hawthorn," Fremantle chief executive Cameron Schwab said. "We're thereabouts, but I get the feeling it's going to take a while to play itself out."
Fremantle was keen to secure Farmer through a trade, which could include one of its top picks in the draft. Should Melbourne receive one of those early picks, it could then have a strong bargaining chip to secure Croad.
However Fremantle would not give up prime draft picks to both Hawthorn and Melbourne.
"It's a very good draft and we're still going to have at least one of the top five picks and maybe two, it depends on how it all falls," Schwab said.
The Dockers also had the top pick in the pre-season draft to scoop up any potential trades that slip through the cracks - for instance, St Kilda and Sydney had yet to strike agreement on Barry Hall.
