All businesses (good ones that last anyway) go through a process of working out what their competitive advantage is. What their strategic edge is. It is difficult to work out what Melbourne based clubs have as an advantage over interstate clubs. Only really Collingwood can compete. They are actually a good model for comparison. I think in terms of variables - things we can leverage in our favour.
Facilities?
Board composition?
Size of supporter base?
Recruiting practices?
Player development?
Coaching staff?
On which of these elements would we be recognised as being best practice? On which of these is it obvious that we hold superior ground to a club like Collingwood? Are our new facilities actually superior to Collingwoods? Just a match? Not even quite there?
Do we get the same time of corporate leverage from our Board and as a result of our supporter numbers as do Collingwood? Does Eddie generate more corporate enthusiasm than Sticks? What about other Board members?
With the ever growing likelihood of free agency is Carlton well placed to succeed in a player tug of war on the basis of its offering?
How does our player development, and associated sports science methods stack up? Do we have the same recruiting presence and capability as Collingwood?
My point is, it isn't obvious to me that we are there yet. It seems to me that we are in catch up mode. Not setting the pace. Not searching for new boundaries. I fail to see how this will result in long term success.
It is a business, the CFC. I'm just not sure how well placed that business is to thrive. I'd like to be convinced otherwise.....thoughts???
