I'm playing in the event 1 at the Melbourne Championships on Sunday, but realistically I'm a novice tournament player at best.

What are some fundamental strategies to follow in larger tourneys? Help me out here guys and if I win I'll give you all a shiny dollar. :)

I aint no expert but i have played in a couple of biggies quantity wise not money wise... one online and one with a $100 buy-in... so what my advise it maybe irrelavent...

My number 1 strategy when its a big tournament... don't be too confident with what you might think is a winning hand... unless you have the nutz... don't go for customers...

I also find in big tournament when there are player changing tables all the time... that trying to figuring out how players play is too hard at the early stages...

The easiest advice you can get is be patient.

Don't panic if you go low early as you still have plenty of time to get back up

I've found that online the best bet is to double up early then defend your stack, attacking the middle sizes stacks for blinds (small stacks are eager to shove because they have to).

Mind you, my online experience isn't great.

haha come on, I'll give you a dollar if i win.

Borgsta hit the nail on the head. The key to early tournament play is patience, by that I mean play quite conservatively. Only play premium cards to a raise i.e AQ, AK and pairs, dump AJ/A10 and lower KQ/KJ, if in position don't be afraid to play suited connectors and try and outplay them after the flop. This is simply the strategy i've adopted and it's worked pretty well for me over the years. Alot of people like to play alot of hands early as the blinds are so small and outplay their opponents after the flop. By the sounds of things you're still learning so maybe you haven't got the experience to be "messing about" playing suited connectors to a raise etc. so the best advice I can give you is to simply be patient.

When facing a raise AJ/10/KQ/KJ etc can get you in a lot of trouble early in a tourney so it's better to simply fold those, unless of course it's a late position raiser and you're in position/defending from the blinds. Just a simple guideline.

Early on i'll call most raises with any pair because the implied odds are so great as stacks are so deep, can easily stack someone and put yourself in a good position.

As the blinds go up increase your range a little and begin to start making more moves and stealing blinds more often. Start continuation betting alot more and open up your range for 3-betting preflop. If you get around the 10 big-blind range you either have to shove or fold, no limping in or flat-calling raises, alot of people will simply get too short doing this and won't be able to recover.

I've gone over my internet limit for the month so I can't give you an exact article to look at, but I reccommend reading as many articles from this site as possible; http://www.pokerlistings.com/poker-strategy-articles
Fantastic site which has advice for all levels of players.

Just tried to load the site then while writing this and the newest article up "How not to suck at Poker: play fewer hands" Looks like we were on the same page there. :) http://www.pokerlistings.com/strategy/how-not-to-suck-at-poker-play-fewer-hands

ps: i'm gonna hold you to that dollar :p :D

here's a tip, try to avoid getting it all-in. if that never happens, you'll win the tournament!

I was going to post it earlier, then decided against it, then changed my mind. Then I was busy. yada yada yada

You know it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind.

For large tournaments i prefer to to start off fairly Loose agressive when the blinds are smaller i will limp into a lot of pots and raise a bit from late posi. Then as the blinds raise i tighten up and wait for premiums/ right times to bluff. You will often find people panic will raising blinds and will dump their chips off to you with average hands. This is pretty basic i guess but works for me a bit.
