Given the kerfuffle over here in the west about the total alcohol ban at the Australia Day fireworks, can somebody bring me up to date with the laws in other states and/or countries.

Pretty sure I was allowed to wander the streets of London with an open beer in my hand.

Yes the UK has an enlightened attitude towards grog. You can board the tube with a can in hand if you like. They'll sell it to you off a cart on the trains.

Thats right chief and lunchlady doris runs the entire trolley network for"british hi-speed rail"
bwahahahaha

During NYE and NY day- its illegal to drink on the streets in Portsea-Sorrento and at Apollo Bay as well.

I remember well the days of boarding a train, cracking open the bourbon and pouring out drinks on the way to Brighton for a Buck's night. Those were the days.

Public drinking suddenly becomes public drunkenness in the same paragraph:

"Public drinking and the behaviour sometimes associated with it can, and does, deeply affect people's ability to enjoy public spaces. Taking a firm approach to public drinking in this way sends a strong message that public drunkenness is socially unacceptable, and will support both the public and transport staff."

Political correctness gone MAAAAAAD!

There were scores of groups on the social networking site Facebook inviting people for a booze up on the Tube last night. Collectively they had tens of thousands of members. "Let's get hammered on Tube day" said one, another was called "One final tube booze party". A hungover group has already formed called "I was at the Circle Line party".

A concise summation of the situation by a concerned YouTube commenter:
