a place for us still playing the dinosaurs game - stud poker (incorporating stud high, stud high/low, and everyones favourite: razz).

discuss strategy, post big hands, and most importantly advise people if there is anywhere were one can get a live game of stud poker happening (can you play anywhere anymore??)

anyway, i'll kick it off. had a very frustrating day today, played about 120 hands and was down about $13.50 (which is 27 big bets at my limits), until this monster came along:

overall for the year i've now played 766 hands at $0.25/$0.50 for a profit of 53.77, which equates to a win rate of 14bb/100 hands... pretty solid for a guy who's still played less than 2000 hands in total.

nh, but turn raise is bad.

Assuming he has the wheel, you're 20% there, and there's only 4 in the pot. Plus your hand is pretty much face up once you make that re-raise (which is ok if the maths adds up, but it doesn't in this case).

The fact that half your profit came from one hand tells you something about the variance!

true but it's hard to put a guy on (x3) 4 in that situation after calling all those bets and raises over the first 5 streets. 234, 345 is not really that strong in that situation... even starting with 3 clubs would get dumped on fourth because of all the clubs that came out on fourth.... i thought he prob had trips the way he persisted with the hand...

as it turned out he had (43) 4... when i suck out on people i'll happily take their money but i'll still feel like i got lucky... but when i saw he started with that i had no such quarms. the dumbass called a bet and a raise on fourth with a pair of four's and a backdoor gutshot straight draw when three players have an open oven pair already and another guy is potentially 4-flushing; these players deserve to get sucked out on.

not too mention he did something redicolous about 6 hands earlier and sucked out on some other guy.... cant remember what.

i've read on 2+2 alot that the variance in stud, especially in lower limits is quite high - mainly because people play a lot of junk starting hands and will follow them through to the river hoping to hit a pair of aces. Obviously this can result in you putting a lot of bets into a pot with your pair of kings only to get nailed by some idiot who just won't fold....

Today would be the first day i've really experienced it properly to be honest - must admit, it wasn't that much fun. up until today it had been a fairly nice steady climb...

not long after that hand i decided to **** it. i've somehow just come out in front for the day so ill just move on from here and not play again for today.

do u play much stud pax?? or mainly just limit holdem?? (i think we should have a limit holdem thread too....i had a good little run playing that but don't play much at all and haven't now for a while. but will get back into it.)

you can really get in the money in lower limit stud with such a basic strategy on third street.... there are some players who just won't fold any pair on the basis of "well if i hit two pair i'll have him" (see the guy above amongst many others) completely oblivious to the fact that either of you could hit two pair and if he hits two pair your usually only drawing to 2-outs the rest of the way.

not too mention the complete garbage people will play - AT4o, K8s6, shite like that.

as I mentioned a couple years ago, this forum really needs a way to post proper hand histories (with suit icons etc). if enough of us suggest it, maybe something can be done.

100%, i thought colour coding was the best i could do. it took too long as well.... unfortunately you can only have 7 images per post. i cut and copied it after i posted it on 2+2 and it appeared in the dialog box of bigfooty but wouldn't let me actually post it!!

Finally get a hand, and then this

Alright, quick qn. Don't have the HH, so I'll just type it out. HU Stud 8/b. Villain is decent but a bit passive for HU.

Villain has [Ac]

I bring in, he raises. Call or raise?

Nah, I play mainly limit and am easing into NL. Also play a bit of micro PLO. The closest I have got to Stud is Telesina, which is like pot limit 5 card stud with a short deck and a community card on the end - crazy game (popular on Entraction).

i'd re-raise. if he re-re-raises you muck em and pick a better spot. if he calls you put him on a steal with about a 20% chance he has aces...

Call or fold. You shouldn't be raising with a Ten showing in Stud-8.

Yeah, that was my thinking. I called 3rd street then just folded on 4th street. Not too nitty? I mean, given he had an ace showing, his hidden cards can basically be any two.

sorry didn't realise it was stud-8... i'd actually probably fold in that situation then. 99-KK cam be deadly

nice little hand four handed, especially when it didn't go beyond 5th street.

poker is so much better when you hold aces and there's raise and re-raises in front of you.
