WOO! My grand final trip has been confirmed! :D

Now, having never been to Melbourne, I've tacked a few extra days on the trip to look around the place. So can the residents of Bleak City suggest for me a few places I might want to see while I'm there? Probably won't be leaving the city, and obviously public transport-linked destinations would be nice....but other than that, I'm open to suggestions!

i go over there quite a bit for crows games... depends how long you're there... but the queen vic markets are a must... the zoo is alright... just check out all the tourist brouchures... the MCg tour is a riot!

Haha! I deleted it. It was a tad ridiculous.

Yep, I do live near the Vic Market. There is just such a lot to see and do that I wouldn't exactly know where to start.

Mr Eagle, what kind of info are you after? What things are you interested in?

You left out the floral clock:D.

If you do not currently have your quota of Kani/Dada/Sean John/Wu-Tang/Fubu/Snoop Dogg wear, than by all means check out the Victoria Markets. You won't find much else there.

For mine, Crown Casino is a goer. I haven't really seen much of Melbourne relative to the amount of times I've been there. There's not many sights to see, it's more commercial bliss, so if you're into that, you'll have a good time.

Ok, I don't think I was implying anyone spend a week there, a couple of hours at the most.

Nothing more to add at this point. :)

Yep, package deal with accom at the Ramada. No idea what seats exactly, though...

Katt: I have no idea. Hence this question :) Well there will be myself and my old man, so two adult males obviously wouldn't want to visit a floral clock ;)

Alrighty then, apart from the obvious information I shall hand you over to the lads for good ol' man stuff. ie what women don't know about. :D (or shouldn't)

Yeah, I'd definitely say Crown Casino and Southbank. I'd also go to Scienceworks, but maybe that's just me :p It's also kinda out of the way. I wouldn't bother with the Aquarium (crock of ****, esp. compared to the interstate ones), and I'm not a big fan of the Vic Market either, but then it depends what you're into and if you've been there before. Also check out Lygon & Chapel streets, definitely. Bridge Rd too maybe. And I like the Jam Factory on Chapel St. :) The Rialto is OK, however I don't remember much since I was 10 when I went, I only remember that I loved the view. Oh, and make sure you go over the Westgate at night. Love looking over the city like that....*sigh* :( (I just read that you don't really want to leave the main city, but perhaps you could go over it on your way to/back from Scienceworks? :D)

If you live in Perth, visiting Melbourne would be akin to a 'normal' person visiting outer space. Bleak City, indeed...
Are you trying to say that Melbourne is cold, dark, and lacks atmosphere? :D

Well apparently the rotties will have to wear breathing apparatus and you won't be able to see me to aim ;)

I went to Melbourne earlier in the year for two weeks and here is my recommendations.

Do not go to the aquarium, it's nothing spectacular.

Check out the botanic gardens, they were really good. Just walking around different places was good, like in St Kilda.

Crown Casino is awesome, check out Kings buffet, it's like $10 for a really good quality buffet, I skipped brekky, went for lunch, and that was all I would eat for the whole day.

If we get into the Granny this year, I'm definitely going.

Mr Eagle

I recently was given a load of SA/VIC Tourism Cards with discounts to stuff in SA and VIC. I have a couple left over, so if you want one let me know.

Nothing spectular, just stuff like 20% discount on MCG Tours, 15% discount on entry to the Museum, 15% off admission price to the Observation Deck, Cooks Cottage, and some other similar places.

Cheers
Danni

You can visit the sewerage treatment plant just outside Werribee. :p They do tours! I am dead serious! It's not what you think either. It's a huge technological investement which was upgraded about 6 years ago, with pipes and mining and computers and all that sort of stuff and you can actually go and have a look.

I'm just...really not sure how best to respond to that option  :D

Queen Vic Markets - might as well have a peek. Open every day bar Monday and Wednesday, I think (http://www.qvm.com.au/).

Zoo, Aquarium - I wouldn't bother

Casino - must see, including the various restaurants (http://www.crowncasino.com.au/).

Rialto - well never been to the observation deck, but why would I, I live here (http://www.melbournedeck.com.au/).

Great Ocean Road - a good day out(http://www.greatoceanrd.org.au/)

Chapel St - bit silly to come to Melbourne and not see Chapel St(http://www.chapelstreet.com.au/)

Federation Square (and Birarung Marr)- haven't spent much time there but the Park is nice (http://www.fedsq.com/)

Lygon St Carlton (particularly good at night after a Carlton or Italy loss)

BeCcA - yeah, she's a sight you won't soon forget :) (htp://www.BeCcA.org.au - ok, made that one up)

ScienceWorks and Crap Place - not sure about these, you might be lucky enough to run out of time and miss them

Other notable mentions - Richmond, St Kilda, South Melbourne, Brunswick St. Check the net.

and don't forget the Grand Final where Essendon will have come from eighth to win flag number 17.

ok, i might have made that up too :(

lastly, check out http://www.visitvictoria.com/
