Likely to be gone at the end of the season so what does that mean for the competition and more importantly for our side.

  • Will it coincide with the return of two ruck men?
  • An extra midfielder?
  • Three tall forwards every game?

How can we use this to our advantage?

teams are now used to running with an extra running type player, I find it hard to think they will go back to 2 ruckman.

Now too much of a disadvantage if they loose an onballer through injury and a ruckman is sitting on the bench

The two ruck strategy is dead. 1 full time ruck + 1 or 2 forwards who can pinch hit in the ruck for a few minutes each qtr (Griff and Vickery)

No sub = an extra running mid.

Interesting question.

I went back through the match reports for this season, to see who replaced who.

We’ve subbed off an injured player 8 times out of 19. No tactic there.

We've subbed off KPF for small forward four times, and subbed off the ruckman for a small forward once. Twice, we’ve subbed out an inside type for an outside type. That's 7 times out of the 11 games that we didn't have an injury.

So, I’d conclude that generally, we try to use the sub to swap out a player that's supposed to win their own footy (contested marking KPF or inside mid) for an outside type. That lets us set up to win contested footy early in the game, then change emphasis to spreading better when players are starting to fatigue. I don’t think removing the sub rule will change that. We might see three talls play 100% of the first half, with one sitting out most of the second, for example.

We’ve replaced like for like four times. The eight players involved there are all reasonably young or fringe players (Menadue, CEllis, McIntosh, Gordon etc), so maybe that’s a tactic for nursing sore bodies? Worked a treat for the Bulldogs with Gia.
