does anyone know what brings them on for no reason?

I'm just sitting here watching TV, not in the dark or anything like that and a fair distance away from it etc, yet for no reason I've just started having a headache.

what gives?

the neck is responsible for the majority of headaches, its probs coming from there

Like diarrhea, headaches aren't a problem but rather a symptom of some other underlying problem. The underlying problem could be serious or more likely benign. This isn't a pre-hospital emergency so doesn't fall under my expertise. Like any other medical issue, if you have concerns, the person to talk to is your doctor and not a bunch of goons on BigFooty.

Fair warning: There are an unbelievable amount of potential causes for headaches. So many that your doctor won't be able to help you without running a battery of tests. How many tests? A full myriad plus some more - one of which will involve sticking something up your ass. Doctors are funny that way.

Save yourself some money. Stay at home, take a Tylenol and stick something up your own ass for free.

You're welcome!

A chiropractor student told me that my headaches probably come from the neck. He's right. Whenever I feel a headache coming on, my neck stiffens. It's the worst when you know it's coming on, but there's nothing you can do to stop it.

His suggestion was to get it cracked a few times by a chiro. I'll get onto that during summer when my headaches really come on.

yer i always use to get headaches as well and it was because of my neck. chiro fixed me right up.

Have you gotten any headaches at all after being fixed up?

yer they would always come back but that was because i use to waterski on a regular basis and the pressure on my neck/shoulders would cause further headaches.

dont waterski much now though so headaches are gone

I used to get daily (mild) headaches as a kid. Took me a few months to get it checked out.

When I finally did, the first thing the GP did was gently press under my eye, asked if it hurt (it did ... intensely) and immediately sent me for X-rays. Had a sinus infection and was prescribed on a nasal spray for a couple of years.

So I guess if you feel severe pain when (gently) pressing the area under the eye/around the cheekbone then you should get it checked out.

-Do you feel "funny" before the headache comes on? Nausea, vision changes, etc.
-Can you describe the headache? Is it on both sides of the head? Behind the eyes? Is it a squeezing pain? Throbbing? How bad is it on a scale from 1-10?
-Do you notice it comes on at specific time: i.e. Only while watching TV? In the morning/when lying down? When you haven't drunk much that day or after eating chocolate/red wine/coffee?
-Does anything make the headache worse/better? E.g. coughing, lying down, panadol.
-Have you had these headaches before?

If you want a placebo go eat a cube of sugar, don't go to a chiro.

Whilst your chiro student friend is correct in that many, perhaps the majority of headaches can be classified as tension headaches, they are usually related to tension of muscles rather than mysterious dislocations of vertebra which cannot be seen on x-rays.
Thus having your neck manipulated is both dangerous and costly, and there is no double blinded placebo controlled trial that shows that it works. Basically it's snake oil.

Better to have a massage and/or apply a hot pack or have a hot bath and take an anti inflammatory (if you don't have any contraindications) or paracetamol.

It's hard to exactly pinpoint where a headache has arisen from.

Perhaps your eyesight is deteriorating? I got headaches from watching TV when I was younger and ended up having short-sightedness.

I think I'll start a thread talking about the myth that is "Chiropracty." It irritates me.
