I was a goose on Sunday when I went to the beach with some mates, I applied sunscreen to parts of my body which I didn't want burnt (my head, shoulders and back) but left the front of my body unprotected because I wanted to get a tan there.

After a few hours sunbaking and swimming, I began to realise that my legs were started to get red so applied sunscreen there but it was already too late, the damage had been done. What was worse was that I then went off to kick the soccer ball round with my mates, topless and not having applied any sunscreen on my chest. The end result was a very sore red body and me feeling a bit under the weather yesterday. Today I feel better but am still very red!

It was pretty stupid and damaging to my skin, though I was just wondering what sunburn remedies do you recommend or apply when you get too much sun?

My sister recommended having a cool bath with some vinegar and oatmeal in it (a weird combination), I tried that last night and it worked pretty well. Aloe Vera always seems good, and in the past when I've rubbed a tomato over the red parts, it's been good too. On the net I've read some weird and wonderful remedies for sunburn over the last couple of days!

What's your favourite remedy for too much sun?
Bearing in mind when it comes to sunburn, prevention is better than a cure! ;)
I found that out, yet again, the hard way! :D

People keep saying cold tea to me, but I'm yet to try that one out.

But one year I had the worst sunburn of my life, on one shoulder particularly, and in trying to get it comfortable, put my arm out of my bed where I found with my hand vitamin e cream. The jar happened to be open which is weird (and goes to show what a tip my room was at the time) I suddenly thought to put the vitamin e cream on my nose and one shoulder, and the next morning those areas were considerably paler than the rest of me.

Now i always use Vitamin e cream, it works better for me than aloe vera.

(edited to say, not empty, open)

Lots & lots of cold showers or baths & skin cream with either vitamin E or aloe vera in it, I prefer the one with aloe vera.

Cool, thanks for that, aggels!

I've heard about the cold tea too, I haven't tried before, have to try it sometime. The Vitamin E sounds good, I might give that a go!

Well, I stupidly didn't put sunscreen on before the BDO yesterday, and got burnt like a potato crisp. So much for rain!

Anyway, mum applied this cream stuff, and it feels a bit better, but still sore. :(

I know what you are going through Sydneyfan, I did the same stupid thing on Sunday and I am still in agony.

I have never been burnt like this, usually I take precautions and cover up with loads of sunscreen if I am going to be out for more than 20 min. My face, chest and legs are a mess at the moment and I didn't think I was out for very long. Blisters are starting to appear.

I swear it used to take a hell of a lot longer in the sun to get burnt when I was a kid, it is scary what the destruction of the ozone layer has done.

Sunburn is in fact a radiation burn, it is bloody dangerous. I'll kick myself when the pain dies down a bit.

You dont want to know how bad i was after the BF match Brett........ 2nd degree burns anyone? :o

I went to Bonnie Doon for the weekend. Saturday was the scorcher up there for me. I applied sunscreen to everywhere except my legs. I now have an extremely attractive wetsuit line on my thighs!

Best thing? I get this stuff by "banana boat" (chemists, supermarkets, anywhere!) called Aloe after sun spray gel. Works wonders. Keep it in the fridge, and it takes away all the pain. PLUS it seems to stop the peeling thing. (another MOST attractive look!)

Hey, I think we all suffered on that one... :( :p :o Luckily, Guinness was a good immediate cure for sunburn. ;) :D

I am fairly lucky that I have an olive type complexion so I don't normally burn, if I do it is only minor and lasts no longer than a day.
But one product that I always use is an after sun spray from The Body Shop. I keep it in the fridge and spray it on. It is really cooling and feels really good. I would recommend that you get some of it, Sydneyfan. It works!

YOGHURT! it works all the time. cover the area in yoghurt and u will feel the cold etc. but just wait until the yoghurt starts to dry or get warm (u might start to shiver now) and then have a cold shower to rinse the yoghurt off. it takes the heat out of the sunburn. works well for me.

Cool, thanks for the replies everyone!

Most of the sting's gone now which is good, I can now actually touch the red areas without pain! I'll have to try out those remedies everyone's recommended.

Blues_Brat, I agree that the sun seems to have more sting to it these days than I remember as a kid. Looking over the net for some remedies, I read a bit about how damaging sunburns can actually be and am kicking myself that I let myself get so burnt.
