My understanding with the sponsor under the collar is that ISC dont sponsor us like they do for other clubs, we went to the AFL looking for a supplier and they gave us the league supplier- ISC which means it opened the door for us to get another sponsor to go under the collar which is usually where the supplier goes.

My tip is that it will be @Realty due to one of the draftees wearing the polo that had that on it.

Not sure why we couldn’t have just sourced our own sponsor or ISC ourselves

Apparently the suns merch sales are alarmingly low- worse than we’d think they are and suppliers are being warned against partnering with the club. It’s quite sad but if we want to be viable we need to purchase the gear then

Interesting re: Jeremy Sharp.....
It will be interesting to see if he can develop into a full-time midfielder, that contested ball stat is almost gospel at this stage. Not many players who cant win there own ball inside mid or not make it as there is not a lot of easy footy to be found in the AFL

I suppose the question is can’t he win it or hasn’t he had to win it previously? I’m backing him in to be a player who’ll be predominantly outside but will be able to go when it’s his turn.

How much contested ball does Isaac Smith or Lachie Whitfield win? I'd be concerned from a team perspective if my specialist outside winger was winning tons of contested ball. Numpty perspective. Laughable.

James Brayshaw IQ = 4
Whitfield and Smith have proven they can win contested ball if needed, that’s the difference. I rate sharp highly and I hope he can make the jump to a bonafide AFL wing but the proof is in the pudding when it comes to winning your own ball. No need for calling it a numpty perspective.

Smith has been between 20-30% contested every year in his career
21% in premiership 2014, 22% contested possessions this year

Whitfield 27% this year

It only becomes an issue when you start getting tagged, otherwise the outside ball winning will be enough for a team devoid of it. We can only hope that he becomes good enough to tag.

We are also a high contested ball winning team. We haven’t had a midfield capable of creating easy outside footy for wingers and outside mids. Hopefully this new batch of midfielders get better at getting it to the outside. Cause blind hacks forward aren’t going to cut it anymore

I promise I’m not bagging on a Suns player here.

A couple of us Lions fans had this discussion about Jeremy Sharp after the U18 National Champs.

What concerned us most was that Sharp was very outside, was a very poor defensive runner, and wouldn’t go when it was his turn.

I then spoke to one of the WA draft watchers, who told me the following.

There were times during the U18 Champs where Sumich would pull Sharp from the field and give him an absolute bake for has lack of defensive efforts.

Sharp got dropped for the last game against Vic C by Sumich, but got recalled at the last minute.

Sharp is a very good overhead mark; is a very smooth, fast runner; and when his kicking boots are on, he is very good. But he sprays the ball when under pressure; and is not a hard ball winner.

This is all from conversations had back in July.

Hope you guys can turn him around and he helps bring you success.

This reads very much like an Aaron Hall Mark II............I certainly hope not.

Yeah hopefully he turns it around otherwise all the hysteria over the pick swap to get him by anti suns campaigners will be justified

Don’t think anyone has ever played footy if they haven’t received a bake from their coach.

Mick Ablett (WA Talent Pathways Manager) assessment of Jeremy -

“Worth a top ten pick”

“Suns got an absolute steal here”

“Has AFL footballer written all over him”

If he wants it hard enough, I’m confident with his physical and footballing talents, he and the coaches will work on his perceived deficiencies until he’s ready.

I go with Ablett too and back Kall Burns's judgement rather than BF Lions fans and a WA scout views.
Every player has weaknesses. It depends now how much he wants it and how hard he works. Talent is there.

Interestingly, Sharp's U18 carnival numbers are comparable to Izaac Smith numbers the last year if it means anything. Disposals 21 vs 22, contested possessions 4.8 vs 4.9, tackles 1.3 vs 2.2, clearances 1.8 vs 1.6

Don’t get me wrong here please. This was all our views in July, looking at kids as draft prospects.

For context, I was also very critical of Deven Robertson’s kicking, and we were split on him, as I put a heavy emphasis on ball use.

We weren’t looking at the kids with our club hats on, so there was no Lions bias at play. And there were fans from many clubs involved in the wider discussions.

When we looked at club needs, and different clubs style of play, then yes, Sharp doesn’t fit what the Lions and Fagan look for in a winger. But this didn’t influence our initial view of Sharp.

I was a big fan of what Sharp could do as an offensive player and his skill set. Also a really big fan of his physical and athletic attributes. He’s genuinely the prototype of what you want in a wing.

Connor Buderick was selected as the AA back pocket. Didn’t play a minute there during the U18 Champs or Academy Series.

There was a lot of discussion whether Buderick deserved a place in the team, but as the Academy Series player of the year, a place had to be found for him.

There are certainly some politics at play with the U18 AA team, and this got discussed post team announcement.

As per most AA teams, a lot of mids selected in non mid positions, etc. Other players miss out because of this.

Not saying Sharp didn’t deserve it or not, but he was one of two back to back AA’s whose inclusion was questioned. The other being Mitch O’Neill.

The other big talking points from the U18’s was, compared, to previous years, it was really poor skill wise, so players with good skills stood out. There were no genuine tall forwards, so it was hard to really rate the tall defenders. And most of the mids were pretty short compared to the AFL, so it was hard to judge the shorter mids performances, as by and large, they were competing against similarly sized mids.
