Thirteen of the fifteen “experts” have predicted we get the wooden spoon. Only Whiting (17th), and surprisingly Barrett (16th) haven’t got us down to finish last.
In all fairness it's hard to see us much higher than that.
I think we've made some great inroads. Off field in particular. But if we can't bag a win in the first 4 rounds, it could take a while. However... given the uncertainty, we could be 0-4 Or 4-0 although the latter may be unlikely.

Stuart Dew pens letter to Gold Coast Suns fans

It’s been a busy off-season with our football department welcoming 14 new staff and 14 new players in what was a significant but deliberate reset of our entire footy program.
We’ve had a greater focus on how we teach the game plan to our playing group and how we prepare our players both physically and mentally.
Pre-seasons are always an important time of the year – we have challenged our players like never before and the playing group has embraced the program.
They’ve spent more than 2000 hours on the training track and ran close to 13,000km. We have delivered an elite AFL pre-season.

Our players have recently visited 71 different schools, footy clubs and community organisations and the positive feedback has been overwhelming.

2000 hours and 13,000km would be the cumulative total of the whole playing list. So guesstimate, about 42 hours and 250km per player. Otherwise, your players each ran for 3 months solid without sleeping.

I'll admit I'm not a runner any more (cyclist here), but that's not really that much running over a 4 month preseason.

Exactly better spend time on training , build up running capacity rather than sitting on a plane .As a cyclist you should knew that basically we take your bicycle and you around the country and China without doing any training .

no idea what you're on about here.

aye, I would hope he's just miscalculated - it's about 20km a week per player. Not an amazing endorsement of the AFL's fitness regime if that is a 'big preseason'

You have 14 new players coming in , with 5 new draftees only trained around 2 week in December. The way your measure Kms with 44 players are flaws ,simple maths .

Will Brodie’s battle for regular AFL football looks set to continue with the Gold Coast Suns

Brodie is frustrated and thinks he's ready. Not good combination when not playing.
It’s been a pretty frustrating last few years but at the back end of last year I put together a lot more games and started to build some continuity. I took a lot of confidence out of that.
Going into this season I feel like I’m ready to make a big impact and put together a season I feel I have been building up towards for a long time. I’m pretty excited and hopefully it all works out. In the past I have had some areas on my game I needed to work on.
I have been in the NEAFL working on them and spent a lot of time there. It’s obviously frustrating, you come into the system and want to play footy straight away, you feel like you’re ready.
I feel like I’m ticking those boxes and putting a lot of effort in there. I’m ready to take the next step.

The headline gives the impression he’s not close to selection but this bit of the article talks more about the past. Why does Boswell think it will continue?

I know Dew likes players with versatility and can play multiple positions but wouldn't you also like a player that can be a ball magnet and dominate on the inside even if is the only position he can perfect, it gets bought up a lot but that would be a waste of another top 10 pick if were to lose him due to lack of opportunity.

Would you see Clayton Oliver, Paddy Cripps, Ben Cunnington, etc are versatile, can play multiple positions and are great runners? Nope, but are are contested bulls who dominate around the clearances.

Cripps can and has played forward in the past.

The other 2 are endurance machines. Brodie's tank doesn't seem to be there yet and deep in a quarter I imagine that would be a liability.

Oliver and Cunnington certainly aren’t endurance machines. Quite the opposite.

I think if Miles is not banging out 30+ every week we'd be stupid to not pop Brodie in the guts. He's no less one dimensional than Miles and we already know he can get the ball.

Another team will give him the opportunity — you'd think with us propping up the bottom of the ladder there'd be a chance for him to at least get on the field after his efforts last year.

Edit: I'd also argue that Brodie has a higher ceiling than Miles. But play both those guys FFS, get some hands on the ball for a change.

My main problem with Brodie not ceiling , Endurance. The same scrimshaw problem .

Don't you have more than 44 players on your list with 2 or 3 extra rookies this year?

Brisbane will be playing 3 contested ball players in our best 22, Neale, Lyon and Mathieson. Nor are we likely to play with genuine wingers, with Berry and McCluggage starting on the wing, and the only noted outside mid in our possible best 22 being Lewy Taylor, and Taylor's not a lock for our best 22. We're more likely to rotate Zorko, with small forwards Charlie Cameron and Lincoln McCarthy up on to the wing.

Mathieson was drafted the year before Brodie, and came in to the system with very poor endurance. It's what saw him drop in the draft in his draft year, recording a 13.1 beep test. He was highly rated as a clearance specialist, but not quite as good or highly rated as Brodie. It has taken Mathieson two big preseasons working on his running with the clubs (now formally) best runner, Nick Robertson to move firmly in to the clubs best 22 discussion, in his fourth year at the club.

Brodie would have to expect similar treatment at any club that if you can't run out games, the club is going to require you work on your endurance, and you're going to have to force your way in through the reserves.

Two available vacant for mid year draft , one recently signed without any pre season with GC through SPP..Not including players like Corbett , Collins , Burgess , Corey Ellis , Wigg, Leslie ,Miles , Murdoch, GHS all actually start a bit late compare to other for pre season.
