As part of a considered and deliberate restructure, the Club is now applying greater focus on High Altitude Training as well as other new initiatives such as blood analysis and sleep programs.

What the hell are those??

High school psychology guy here, so grain of salt it. :p

Normally associated with infants, sleep programs are used to ensure that individuals get the right amount of sleep, that the sleep itself is the "regenerative" sleep and you are soundly asleep as opposed to contorted punching your pillow and fading in and out of sleep and subsequently are then refreshed each and every day which give you a better chance to perform better in your day to day activities because you and your body are not then fatigued as opposed to either / both of them.

As an example, a baby will generally need to feed every 2-3 hours when born, thus sleep periods will range 2-3 hours as well, by "programming" instead of "scheduling" sleep that 2-3 hours sleep is sound said baby may then skip the next rotation due to not needing sleep to recharge.

Important to note that Kearney's relationship is not genetic, but rather through marriage. So outbursts, arrogance and a need to have the world revolve around him, won't necessarily be present.

This is a point against him, he decided to marry into that family. But I am willing to forgive when we hold the cup high. :p

Part of the reason for this was personnel, but there was something rotten at the club during its slump.

It's rotten all right - in other words Billy Slater was injured. :)

They peaked at the correct time of the year - might have been due to heavy fitness training and loading during the middle part of the season, with the view of relaxing the fitness regime come the business end of the season. One can only speculate. This does not concern me for the St.Kilda appointment.

There is a video (haven't watched). Thought this might an OK thread to use (as a related story).

http://www.saints.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/5315/newsid/151320/default.aspx

Luke Vella is an exercise physiologist for the Saints, and the newest member of St Kilda’s High Performance Department.

Vella is no stranger to elite sporting environments, having spent the past five years at Collingwood before playing a vital role in the development of the Malaysian Cycling Team’s Olympic success.

Vella has been undertaking a PhD program, researching molecular biology in relation to recovery interventions and how the process of recovery is linked with processes of muscle adaptation.

He’s basically challenging the way athletes prepare and recover for elite sport.

“We’re essentially stripping the recovery process back to basics; trying to understand what happens post exercise. From there we can make a more informed decision about what recovery interventions we put in place.”

Vella hopes his links with Deakin University’s exercise and sports science study program will help bolster St Kilda’s capacity to apply the latest research at the Saints.

“My role here at the Saints is going to be a little bit of a hybrid role, so primarily I’ll look after the guys that are in rehab and I’ll also play a role within the sports science department.

“I’ll work with Simon Kearney to develop and implement a lot of different monitoring systems and also help try to build the sports science program from a research point of view.”

Kearney said he was hoping to bring his detailed fatigue measurements and an emphasis on altitude training to his new role.

“There were a number of ways we’d measure player fatigue levels which I’ve brought across from the Storm which we started there. We’ll be implementing those at St Kilda and the altitude programs we’ve started at the Storm as well,”

He said training programs were becoming more specific at AFL level. “The age of the player is a big one, the position is a factor as well. Their injury history and the expectations of what they need to do to perform well in their position from a physiological point of view are big ones as well,”

He said there were a number of advantages the players could get from the two-week camp. “It will be huge. There are a lot of benefits you can get from altitude and apart from the whole altitude side of things it is also a really good way to get the team together and go over their structures,”

“Getting all the boys in the one place 24 hours a day for three weeks is pretty unique so it would be a really good base and really good building for a year ahead.”

But there are special circumstances that mean he will have to miss the trip as his wife Danielle is due to give birth to their second child.

“She’s due right in the middle of the camp. That’s not to say she couldn’t come in the next few days,” he said.

Well going on the fact that Essendon have been caught and punished for salary cap breaches and so has Melbourne Storm. Essendon then moved on to chemical cheating, hopefully Storm learned from the first punishment - would be brain dead if they didn't as their punishments were huge!!!

I'd be running the club so that it doesnt matter who you employ.

ie sports scientists etc are not to administer ANYTHING. Make the players aware.
Only qualified people are permitted to administer items from the TEAM MEDICAL STORE.
The people ( doctors etc ) who are qualified to administer drugs do not have the team winning as a KPI.
_______________________________________________________
So a sports scientist would basically write an in-house prescription.
The sports scientist could oversee the person administeriing if he wanted to, but would not do the administerring.
Administerring staff can only take substances from the team medical store. Items taken are recorded as to who they are given to and how much. All stock is monitored.
Only approved items can be stocked in the team medical store. The purchasing people are told what to buy and from who.
If the sports scientist or doctor want to use something new, there is an approval process to go through before it can be stocked in the TEAM MEDICAL STORE.
______________________________________________________

This sort of system is not completely incorruptable, but it would be HARD to rort.

Tony Brown will work with every player to help with a range of issues such as education, life skills, media training, adapting to the demands of the AFL system and planning for a life after football.

“As a 17-year-old I came in with my eyes wide open and had to grow up pretty quickly. In my first year we finished 14th and there were talks that the Saints might have to merge with another club,”

“but thanks to a lot of loyal people around the place we won the Ansett Cup premiership in 1996 and played in the 1997 Grand Final."

“I don’t think it would be encouraged for five players to live together. Aussie, Joel, Matty, Max and myself were all pretty close. We shared that house for a period of time and we still keep in touch.”

After 108 games in six seasons, Brown was delisted after new coach Malcolm Blight was appointed.

Brown made his way to SANFL club Port Adelaide where he won a Magarey Medal and captained the club.

“When I was delisted at 23 it was wasn’t ideal. I expected it to last a bit longer,”

“I’ve followed the Saints ever since my career ended but obviously a bit more so now.”

After five years at Port Adelaide, Brown played with his original club Leopold. He finished a Bachelor of Education and got a job with Haileybury.

Brown signed up with the school’s old boys team to join Stewart Loewe and Brett Voss, with Jamie Shanahan coaching.

Max Hudghton no longer appears on Saints website as a specialist coach
