There's been a bit of talk up here in Sydney about NRL matches involving the group of Bulldogs (formerly Canterbury) "supporters" who have been starting brawls and harassing opposition fans both at the game and to and from the game.
They are playing this year at the Sydney Showground (near the Olympic Stadium) and apparently last week at the Olympic train station there were brawls occurring.
I had a look at their website @ http://www.bulldogs.com.au at (the Dog Bites section of the website) and there were some pretty alarming accounts from both Bulldogs and opposition supporters regarding these thugs and the capers they have got up to. These cowards have even been known to intimate and harass young families and it has driven a lot of true supporters from the game. To combat this problems there's been some pretty large penalties being proposed including lifetime banning troublemakers of going to NRL games, closing the hill area of the Showground, a huge increase in camera surveillance, police and security presence, and possible prison time
I remember going to AFL matches in Melbourne where I never saw anything as bad as this. I saw one or 2 fights but that's about it. I remember going to NRL games at neutral or away grounds and you'd often geta fairly frosty reception from away fans but it seems to be worse now. Being in a one team town here in Sydney it's hard to judge opposition supporters because usually there's less 5,000 away supporters there.
I was wondering whether any of you guys have experienced over the top thuggish behaviour like what's been occurring over the last couple of years with the NRL Bulldogs or do you reckon things in AFL are more sporting where opposition fans heckle each other during the match but once it's over, there's no hard feelings.
A lot of the problems at the NRL Bulldogs home games seem to be linked to young troublemakers who have nothing better to do than harass, intimate and attack opposition supporters because they are Bulldogs "fans". They reckon there's about a group 50 to 100 people making the mischieve but it's affecting thousands of people and turning people off going to matches.
I hope this doesn't occur to the same extent in AFL games.
