THE hysteria surrounding the Australian Test side reached new heights yesterday with claims Michael Clarke was pushing for Simon Katich's Test selection.

Clarke has not spoken to Katich and the Australia captain is looking to bring new blood into the side rather than attempting to correct the errors made by the last selection team.

The axing of the reliable opener is an unhealed wound in Australian cricket.

The opener had been the second highest run-scorer in world cricket in the three years leading up to his last Test and was the only Australian player to average 50 over the past five years.
His replacement, Hughes, has been unable to produce the same results as Katich.
In 33 matches as an opener Katich scored eight centuries.
Temporary opener Dave Warner, chosen by the new selection panel, carried his bat in the second innings at Hobart. The last opener to do that was Katich, also against New Zealand.

My bolding to point out just how ****ing stupid it was to drop Katich.

Thread title and article pretty much sums it up.

It'd be even better if he was also asking for Hodge, Rogers and Bollinger too.

You know what I like most about that story? The use of the word hysteria in the headline.

I mean, who's hysterical here? The players? The fans? The administrators?

I don't think so.

If there is hysteria – and that's a ridiculously over-used tabloidy term – it originates and resides almost exclusively in the media. There is no evidence of hysteria other than the media's insistence that it exists. The coverage, therefore, needs to be even more hyperventilating and shrill to give credence to that assessment.

So you have an article which, by employing the over-the-top language of Today Tonight to make the story more 'grabby', effectively dumps shit on the media itself, characterising its tone as one of "excessive or uncontrollable emotion, such as fear or panic or mental disorder".

People have criticised the Australian media before but this time it's self-confessed. Now that's hysterical.

Good. This whole Clarke vs Katich thing is immature. Have a drink, have a chat & both of you get the hell out there & score a hundred each on Boxing Day.

Clarke doesn't drink beer.
That's ok, Katich can have a beer, Clarke can have a Cruiser and they can sort their problems out.

Maybe he's doing it (if in fact he is) to show the public that he's not a petty, whiny little girl (notwithstanding whether he is or not in reality).

bingo. Simple PR to keep his reputation in tact.

Everyone knows Clarke is a mummy's boy who doesn't drink beer - getting the Kat back in the team won't solve that.

i was a huge Katich fan but his time has passed unfortunately - maybe if Warner was also struggling.

When I was growing up and Australia were more often than not giving us a hiding, there was one constant. Australia would give young talented players a go before going back to older players. England would bring back Cowdrey, David Steele, Brian Close etc wheras the Aussies would take a chance with players like Doug Walters and Ricky Ponting.

Just saying.

Can ANYONE remember that Katich WAS NOT DROPPED. He was injured.

Anyone remember that? Anyone? And since then he's carried on like a child. Stuff him. Let him rot away in grade cricket bitching in pubs about how evil Michael Clarke ended his career.

So they guy who was the second highest run scorer for 3 years and our only batsman to average 50 over the past 5 years should be black listed for non performance reasons?

Is that you Andrew?

He's blacklisted a) because he's a sook and doesn't deserve a spot after his carry on and b) we need to start transitioning the Test side. Should've started years ago. Bringing Katich back is a mid-90's England style thing to do. Would be ludicrous.

What's done is done, whether you agree or not.

No sense having 3 of your top 6 in their late 30s.

Katich's test career is over, too bad.

Can't remember him bringing out anything into the public eye until after he was dropped, not given a contract and shunned by the Australian cricket team. The bloke was one of our most dominant batsman for 3 years and gave us much stability, stability to which we are crying out for.

Settle down Andrew or is it Michael?

He wasn't dropped. Just because you repeat something multiple times doesn't make it true.

Katich is just bitter and twisted because he didn't get to go out the way he wanted to. He got injured and in the time he was out the selectors decide that it was as good a time as ever to move forward and bring in the next generation.

Whilst Phil Hughes might not of worked and what we've seen of Warner so far is promising, it doesn't change the fact that the selectors in my opinion made the correct decision. Once you've decided to move on there was no reason to give him a new contract either.

I also think they need to move Hussey & Ponting on as well, one must go for Boxing Day.

Very few people in elite sport get to walk away on their own terms from any sport. I fail to see the reason why we should allow the likes of Katich or anyone else to get a golden send-off when they are no longer in the best players available to be picked. Professional sport is a business and when you let sentiment enter any business decision its more than likely you will make the wrong decision.

if there was a good batsman beating down the door hussey would have been gone during his form slump, just unlucky for Katich that two good openers and a solid no3 are on the scene.

Yeah that opener who replaced him was dominating the shield and tore it up at test level:confused:
