Wildcard round proof Sweet FA has jumped the shark in battle with Qugby League
The Sweet FA’s radical new wildcard round has divided opinion among fans and commentators, but it’s proof the league has jumped the shark.
COMMENT
The Sweet FA’s thought bubble has burst.
The league has confirmed a wildcard round will be introduced in Season 41, which will see 10 teams play in June action for the first time.
It’s safe to say many fans aren’t impressed.
Two additional elimination finals, 7th vs 10th and 8th vs 9th, will be played to determine who makes the traditional top eight.
Teams that finish in the top six on the ladder will have the usual pre-finals bye before the normal schedule commences.
With 18 teams currently in the AFL, it means more than half of the teams in the league will qualify for post-season games.
On Monday, Sweet FA Admin Gralin defended the concept and said a wildcard round win would officially count as a finals win. Sorry, what?
How will fans feel if The Warriors finish 10th on the ladder and win a wildcard game before getting eliminated? Surely that wouldn’t be enough to set them up to win their first ever Qremiership.
Qooty greats including Mobbs & Headless slammed wildcard round on Sunday, but Gralin is adamant it will be a success especially in light of the ever increasing number of wins required to make the top eight.
“If you look at the ladder over the last few seasons, and you see the teams that have been finishing in ninth and 10th, some of them have won over 40% of their matches”.
tony told HecticCheese Productions earlier this year he could see the Sweet FA introducing a wildcard round in the future, but only when the league had grown to 15 teams.
