I'm personally a big fan of down the guts, nice and direct and we have shown that we can do it.

Every team switches play, back and across, back and across. I have no problem with this but we can never seem to pull it off.
I would like to know what everyone thinks, because it seems to me that we turned it over every time we tried, by either having an opposition player too close to the target or we'd just drop it and end up giving away a goal.
Was it a skill issue? Should we stick with it?

Just as long as the players make the right decisions and hit targets more often that not, then I will be happy. I'm more of a fan of the direct style, however, not when we just bomb it in long, and leave Fev against 2-3 opponents. Go direct when we can, move it on quickly, however, when we have to chip it around, then we should be able to do that as well.

I prefer to watch attacking direct footy but there needs to be a bit of both, and it also depends on who we are playing, i am sure it will vary slightly from week to week. One thing that annoys me greatly is when we turn it over from poor disposal playing either style, i do believe with ratts in charge our skills will improve to the level required for senior footy which will help either style, because lets face it our skills have been poor in recent times excluding a handful of players. As long as we improve in most areas next year, it will be a great platform for the future.

To be honest, i'm not that fussed as long as you see your team gets the win. Obviously you would prefer to watch a team attack down the guts and watch a fast attacking game.
Unfortunately at Carlton at the moment, i just don't think that switching the play would work because we don't seem to have good enough disposal of the ball to rely on players consistently hitting targets.
I would have to say DOWN THE GUTS!

Switching play out of the defensive zone is necessary sometimes to create space for other players to lead into. Whilst directing the ball back into the corridor around the wing forward of the center and the half forward line gives a team far more options for attack.Playing down the guts is very predictable so I think Carlton needs to mix it up, sharpen their foot skills, take risks and run and carry it through the middle a bit more next year..

An interesting topic which some people need to clarify what they are arguing.
One is whether we play wide and switch to allow plyers up the ground to lead into the open side, or to go "up the guts" as it were.
vs
Bomb it long or hit short targets.

I think we have seen the Pagan version of switch play, get it to the wing then bomb it in.
Easy to defend with a loose man.

I think with Ratten we will still switch the ball out of defence to the open side to create some space, but will come back into the middle a little more and back our run, handballs and then try and hit targets with shorter kicks around HF and I50.
A number of training drills seem to be centred around running to support and hitting targets with handballs.

I think it'll be a combo of both....

IMO, across half back is where its set up....you switch across the wing, this setting up the free forward on that side....i'm sure you can have set plays where a leading forward Fev/Fisher will know its going to be switched and then they know to dummy lead and then find space.

Direct footy is best if its open play...like all my great coaches said...the quickest way to goal is down the guts...

But it doesn't always work that way....
