apparantly if Athens isn't ready in time, which is looking more likely every day, the olympics will revert back to Sydney.

don't you listen to the news dave? i'm not sure how likely it is that Athens won't be ready in time or if it's just the sydney media drumming it all up.

Old news that wont eventuate.

It would be too costly in the current environment.

well if Sydney forecasts that they will make a loss from it, are they obliged to stage it because they certainly did not bid for it. but that said, i'd imagine since all the infrastructure is practically already there, it'd be a cash bonanza. last time expenditure was tied in with the building of the olympic park and what not and it still made a healthy profit.

Accomodation would be a problem. What happened to the Olympic Village after the games? did they flog it off?

yes, they sold it off as residential housing. i must admit the costs would be enormous, but a shadow of what they were the first time around.

and it's another handy excuse for Richard Colless to use when he tries to explain how he got the swans in such a financial hole. we need one for next year, coz the rugby excuse won't wash :D

Not tonight. I just find this staggering. How could Athens not be up to scratch yet? And they're going to change the Olympic venue, what, just 12 months before it starts? Such a thing would be unprecedented.

It highly unlikely that Athens wont host the games, BUT (as nicko said) IF they are not ready, then they have to have the games somewhere and the mostly obvious place is where they were last held! Therefore Sydney!

I believe (but dont quote me on it!) that it is a condition that IF the next country to host the olympics is not ready for whatever reason, then they will be held in the last host country IF they are able to!

Hmm. Might be worth me renewing my lease.

Athens will be ready. They won't be able to host all the test events before the games and still need to complete a media village and sports centre.

Ticket sales have been selling very well in Europe. Is anyone from BigFooty heading over to Athens next year?

Even though much of the infrastructure is still in place I really can't see how Sydney could be any more ready than Athens.

That's only 15 or 16 months away and there's more to it than building venues.

Sydney was preparing for what? 8 years? All the ticketing, security, accomodation etc there is just so much to organise that I reckon Athens would probably be way ahead of Sydney already.

If it was going to be changed I reckon it would've been decided by now.

Still, it would be nice if it was in Sydney again. I didn't go in 2000 and I wished I had afterwards.

This story has come up a couple of times over the past few years and **** is right, if Athens isn't well prepared for the games, there's little than chance Sydney would be in 15 months, despite having experience and maintaining much of the infrastructure. The only reason the 2000 Games went so well was due to the meticulous planning over 7-8 years.

Sydney was also incredibly lucky that no terrorist act occurred and I don't think the Olympics would be as relaxed an affair as they were in 2000 post Sept.11. That said it be great if Sydney got the games, I wouldn't mind heading over to Athens too if I get the chance/money.

Looking at the fact where would the Athletics take place seeing as the Main Stadium in no longer big enough to fit a running track. The Athletes Villiage wouldn't be ready in time and half the venues used for 2000 are no longer able to be used for the events from last time. Not to say ticketing and other issues.

Could be done if we knew say today we would get them but its really wishful thinking on the medias part the games will take place don't you worry

BTW Ch 7 have the TV rights for the game so nothing to be missed there

yes, that would save us from the 24hr a day drivel they put on whatever channel gets the rights!

Channel 7 have the rights to the Olympics up until the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics. Not sure if they also have the rights for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
