A passenger train travelling between Sydney and Melbourne has derailed. The accident happened near Wallan. So far there have been two tragic deaths, believed to be drivers.

Reports indicate that there had been signalling issues on the line, the service was running around two hours late and the driver may have been attempting to make up time.

2 fatalities too many. Much investigating to do here.

The signalling issues were due to a fire in a control box and subsequent repairs. There's been some cable theft apparently as well.
As a result the normal operation of the signalling(CTC) was suspended between Donnybrook Passing Lane and Kilmore East Passing lane with Train Authority Working issued by ARTC Network Control.

During that day an alteration was issued for 1430-2130 hours that trains were to use the loop at Wallan. That particular move has a 15km/h speed restriction on it.
