I was wondering about the Sydney Swans rookie players. Are they any good?

Why is Roosy taking gaelics youngsters from overseas and turning them into footballers?
I think he is wasting time and money beacuse only around 1 out of 5 of them stay and play football. The others get homesick before they even play a match. Does he think they'll all turn into stars like Tadgh Kenelly?

Rookies cost very little and taking a chance on a Gaelic player like Murphy, Coney, or McKaigue is probably worth it more than taking some skinny lad at the end of the Rookie draft.

Of our other Rookies, I have a feeling Gilchrist could turn into a bit of a player, he was just an under-age recruit, so I suspect either this year or next year could see him come into contention for getting a game towards the end of the season.

Orreal is a long term ruck prospect, although the rumour is he's going to be promoted to the senior list. He's still a bit gangly, but ask Soph about him, she seems to know more.

Thornton was re-rookied after he was delisted last year after doing his ACL, and as you should know, made a successful debut this year and played a good season and should be in line for promotion.

Pyke, an International Rookie, costs even less, and may stay on the Rookie list. He has shown he has great skills purely as a tap ruckman, but still needs to learn the game at ground level.

Very well said Stat. Plenty of Rookies regardless of where there from fail to make the grade and in a draft reputed to be as weak as this taking a punt at the back end with someone regarded as very athletically gifted is OK with me.

Across all clubs the Irish experiment has at least broken even since it began.

International Rookies

Cons:
- financial and time cost in the scouting and recruiting of international rookies
- potential homesickness

Pros:
- international rookies don't count towards the salary cap
- international rookies (excluding irishmen) don't count towards a player position on our list
- rookies don't cost much salary wise
- only the best international prospects come here i.e. athletic monsters, with huge potential

Other:
- ordinary homemade rookies are just as much hit and miss as the international prospects
- more and more clubs are scouting overseas, if we ignore this market, we will languish
- with the new cut-off age and two new teams entering the competition... the available talent for all clubs in the draft dimishes, hence the requiremnt to search abroad

If you need further convincing, try to imagine our 2005 Premiership side without Kenelly.... i can't. Not all the youngsters will work out, but it's an initiative worth taking

There's no such thing as an under age recruit on the rookie list, the draftee must be drafted in their 18th year as a minimum. Last year 17yo's were able to be drafted for the last time but ONLY to the main list.

Hmm, I'm fairly sure people were saying he looked a likely prospect this year, but we took him last year as a Rookie instead.

Can assure you if he played this year in the TAC it would have been as a overage 19yo (TAC clubs can have 2 and some clubs 3, overage or 19yo players, usually as a reult of a LTI), or VFL if he wasn't rookied.

While not international rookies, and a bit off topic, but in the next 5-10 years I will be watching with interest at how the GWS team may interract and develop with the many African immigrants and 1st and 2nd generation African-Australians who live out west. How long before we see our first African-Aussie star?

One will possibly be drafted this year: Majak Daw

The enemy is on here, West Sydney Rats would be a good title for the new club

The Main board is reporting new rookie rules.

Rookies may be kept for 3 years and a mature age rookie may be included.

If true this is excellent news for the club and Jake O. Soph has already reported the club are going to keep him and if he's a third year rookie without the need for a pre rookie draft select than a third year on the R list for this boy would be wonderful for his development.

Thornton I still expect to be upgraded to the main list straight away and Gilchrist left on the rookie list through 2010.

I don't like Thornton,
i think Sydney won't delist him either because it would be sad to have 2 chances at playing in the AFL and stuff up at both times.
He is CRAP!

I am a child... Are we not all children of someone :p

Are... you serious? He has great hands, and whilst not the fastest player was still averaging a goal a game early in the season.

Are you a Child?

or are you unable to put forward a valid point for debate:rolleyes:

Well give this person a chance Robbie.

Please demonstrate where Thornton has in fact stuffed up either chance.

He supports Liverfool, stuff him as there is enough of his type on here already

I like reading from new posters no need to chase them off, I didnt expect that from robbie being a mod an all, and going by his/her username it actually may be just a kid so no need for it..
