Am I right in thinking that most ideally wouldn't have Raines in our best 22. Who could we potentially use as a tagger to replace Raines in this role for 2012 and beyond?

I would keep Raines as a tagger, We are getting Richard Newell in the Rookie Draft, but he wont be ready to play straight away IMO Raines is good enough.

Raines is good enough just to nullify an opponent. But really needs to improve his disposal to become a more valuable member of the midfield.

As one who has bagged Raines as not good enough, I would have to say that he has found his niche as a tagger and has done very well this past season. He definitely well and truly exceeded my expectations.

Definite keeper in this role.

Agreed he played a reasonable role in 2011 but IMO if we want to be a contender we need someone who get it and use it in this role.

Newell could be a contender for 2013 - I understand he played some good roles in the reserves this year.

Raines got plenty of the ball since coming back in after injury this year, and his disposals efficiency was good, apart from maybe 2 or 3 games(since returning)

Ok well it sounds like everyone rates him higher than me. Fair enough.

That is a big call if you're saying a guy we are getting in the rookie draft is going to become our tagger. It's a very specific position to lock someone into before they are even officially drafted or shown they can even get promoted to the senior list.

RICHARD NEWELL

If we wanted to get cute we could try and draft Brad Hill. Lacks some strength but he has endurance to run all day and is very quick just like his brother. His skills are pretty good but he would have trouble finding it if you put a bell on it and tied it around his neck.

Its what he did very well at the Champs and has done on occasions for the ressies unless I miss my guess. He is not like other recruits as he has been training with us all year.

He did a fantastic job on Wingrove at the Champs and I rate him the best player in this draft.

Newell has been playing in our ressies for what maybe 2 or 3 years now, And He is a very good tagger, good skills and good endurance(apparently). That aside I am not saying he is going to become our tagger, But the club has committed to taking him in the Rookie Draft.

Not doubting his ability, it's good to hear there's another decent player coming to the lions as a rookie but I think it is a ridiculous call to assume that a player that has only played as a NSW scholarship player for the lions will be promoted to the senior list and get into the best 22 and play as a tagger. Awesome if he does but there is a hell of a long way to go for him and many years in the gym.

No reason to change Raines' role in the team. We don't have any other options at this stage, and Raines does still get the ball when tagging. He isn't super damaging, but some players don't get the ball at all when tagging, Raines atleast makes them a little accountable the other way as well. He still has ok pace and links up well. Newell seems to be our future, but is a few years off i would say.

I am not saying that. The thread title says for 2012 and onwards. He might not even become a good player.

Looks like thats what you said to me

Newell has been promising enough to assume that we will pick him up, and he is a bit of a tagger. Will he develop to AFL, no one knows, and i doubt we will bet the house on him becoming an AFL quality tagger, but he will get on our list.

Raines is in our best 22 and is our best stopper. He seems to go quite well when not struggling with injuries. He still needs to work on his disposal and decision making though.

That's my problem. Has a crack, and has some speed but can be a liability when he uses the ball. A little like Clinton Jones but Jones is much better.

Is anyone else capable of becoming a tagger in our current list? Have any of the boys like Green or Bartlett played these sorts of roles for the reserves?

Firmly in your camp Swanny.

Andrew Raines is a complete and utter liability anywhere near the ball. I don't know whether people are giving him credit for not out and out stuffing it up but I see no value in him whatsoever. I've tried giving him a fair go when watching him live or on TV but boy it is a sad indictment on our team atm that he is a first 22 player.

I know exactly what you mean. What about Polkinghorne? Not sure he has the tank to run all day but certainly has the strength and mongrel to compete. Also can be damaging on the rebound.

Could see Green doing it, from what I've seen of Cal, I wouldn't make him a tagger. I rate the attacking side of his game over the defensive side personally, and just think he could be such an exciting player through the midfield if we let him be. Making him a tagger would really just cage him up IMO.

Definitely great signs ahead for Newell. One of the guys I remember seeing the first game of against Southport at Coorparoo this year, and just thinking he had something.

On this reasoning you would never be able to assume that any draftee would be able to step in and play a role for a team.

The kid has been playing a role with the team for the last year and they have had a good look at him along with quite a few on here in that role. The team has committed to going with him. He did an excellent tagging job (whilst winning plenty of it himself) on arguably the best junior midfielder in the country.

I have looked at him closely and I can easily see him filling in a tagging role in our best 22 maybe not at the start of the year but certainly by midyear say. Coaches often start players in run with roles and that is likely to happen with Newell.

Newell is also one of the more developed juniors and already has a pretty good build. He had a preseason with us last year and will have another this year. He will have a better build from round 1 than Black has played his entire career with.
