Since the footy season is over and there is nothing better to do I thought I might read up on some of the possible draftees and there is one name that I found very interesting and thought he might be worth a punt with a later pick.

Brad Moran is 200 cm / 91 kg ruckman from Southport QLD. He moved from England to Australia 2 years ago and took up footy only 12 months ago. One thing that is a bit surprising is that he broke the record in 20 meter sprint in QLD state Screening Camp. Seriously, you would have to look at this kid with a later pick. At that height and raw ability he is worth a later pick. Ruckman don't grow on trees and if we can get this kid and spend 3 years teaching him how to play the game he could be one of those sensational stories.

I would seriously consider this lad with pick 40 if he is still there. With more focus on youth development and with Alan Stewart onboard I feel confident that he can develop into a good ruckman in a few years time. I think he will be a big gamble but has a potential to pay off big time.

I would like us to pick up another ruckman with earlier picks. With first 3 picks I would like us to pick up a ruckman and 2 midfielders. With pick 40 and 56 I would like us to take a punt on a couple of kids and I would like one of those picks to be another ruckman.

Thoughts??????

''One of the more interesting stories of 2004, Moran moved to Australia from Stratford in England less than two years ago. After trying rugby he was urged to play Aussie Rules'' Clive Waterhouse?

''Footydraft.com comment: A 200cm player with his speed would have to be considered, but he is so raw a rookie list with the Lions might be his best chance.''

In your search for the ultimate for the Crows your zest is to be admired..I have a few concerns though..

200cm and 91kg thats pretty thin by my reckoning I know he can beef up but if he does he loses speed
I am also concerned at his rawness in general I know we have had Clive from soccer and Stynes and co from Gaelic Football but to be honest Clive never set the AFL on fire

I agree Alan Stewart could do wonders with him but I dont know if i am prepared to use pick 40 on him..but certainly if he is there in later picks or can we rookie draft him?

Maybe one day I will regret saying let him go but I think thats a long way off

I listened to Fantassia on the radio today and he is pretty confident they have the right picks to get what they want. So we got to trust that they will get the job done, with Stewart on board, i'm sure we will. I would much prefer we take Monfries with Pick 8, if he is still available, and then worry about ruck options after that. I know we desperately need young ruckman but I don't think we can over look a special midfielder like Modfries for maybe an average ruckman like Woods.

I'm hoping we can pull out a couple of smokies with the rookie draft.

I agree with everyone else in that the ruck is an area crows need to seriously look at for the future in this draft, however lets not forget that we still have Hudson who has been dominating with North, and not looked out of place in his limited AFL appearances, and the young lad Andrews playing for the bays. Obviously he is still very raw, but what ive seen of him personally there is a bit to like. I do think tho that a ruckman/forward in the mold of a fit ottens, simmonds or everitt is something we should be looking for. And who knows, when clarkey retires biglands might take that extra step that he has been promising.

Do you honestly think that 91kg is light, when the kid is only 18? If anything that is pretty heavy.

Wood is 203cm and weighs only 86kg, whilst Messen is 200cm and is 88kg, and these two guys are very highly ranked ruckmen in this draft.

Young talls always take a while to put on weight - DeLuca in this draft is an exception at 201cm and 96kg.

You seriously need to re-think his current weight being a problem.

I've never seen this guy play so I'm happy to leave it up to Fantasia to make the right decision about whether to pick Moran and where.

I personally want Monfries at #8, and hopefully we can take someone like Maric at #24, a midfielder at #28, and then pull a couple of smokies with our other pick (or two). I'd love to see us grab someone like Moran for the rookie list, I think this is where we should use our wealth to advantage, but trying, where the salary cap permits, to use the full rookie list.

I really want us to use five picks in the main draft, but it depends on how many delistings, and whether or not M.Stevo comes up, as I'd like us to have the chance to use a PSD pick as well.

Even if Moran puts on another kilos he will not lose that much pace for him to be a slow log.

If there is such a thing as a project player I think this lad fits the bill. Picks 40 and 56 are punts at the best of times especially in a shallow draft. What better punt to take than on a athletic raw ruckman.

If we leave him for the Rookie List Lions will pounce because I think they have the first right to him under the development rule. Maybe this is doesn't exist anymore but I don't see a problem in picking up raw as hell ruckman who has only been playing the game for 12 months and already looks promising.

In this draft I would like us to take 3 midfielders and 2 ruckman who can play KP. I know for a fact that we will have 1 pick in the pre-seaso draft and I don't think we will use pick 56 unless there is someone there that we REALLY like (ala Johncock in 2000)

I did and I also looked at a few current ruckmen and 5 kilos isnt much on big guy so I guess your right..I just like to see guys have the ability to crash packs and sometimes these days its not done often enough.

Fair enough but if there are more experienced ruckmen? Or do you like to punt on a pair of 10s :p

I truly think we need to get it right tis time and 3/2 split sounds ok but its the number 2 that worries me in all this.. Do we go with the best left or do we go for what we want/need?

im going to say it again stiffy my punt would be:

Thomas Redden
Details:
Club: Sacred Heart/Glenelg
DOB: 18 June 1987 Hgt: 190cm Wgt: 74kg
Position: Key Position/Onballer
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
National Draft Camp 2004

Strengths: Thomas could be one of the surprises of the draft, getting a draft camp invite despite not playing for SA in the carnival. He has spent most of the year playing school football for Sacred Heart where he has been a star.

Redden is a tall midfielder with the ability to play in a number of key positions, in a similar mould to former schoolmate Andrew Mackie. He was given an exemption into this year's draft so there is plenty of scope for improvement. He has good pace, good skills and his versatility will make him very attractive to most clubs.

Weaknesses: Almost unproven at the elite level, clubs are really taking a gamble on selecting Redden.

Footydraft.com comment: Every year Sacred Heart seem to produce a player from left-field, and Redden looks like it for 2004. Players of his versatility are gold for any AFL recruiter and this should see Thomas selected.

this kid will be an absolute star! i would not mind if we took him with 8 but i know we wont, footy draft has him going at 27, id rather us use 24 on him and take the punt, trust me he would be totally worth it.. also if we take another punt, Jack Juniper at 40 or 56 too another SHC boy but definately worth it too!

son of mick (Dennis?) started the year with North and Jarman sent him back to whichever team he was playing for in the mid north for "further development". May see him playing for the ***** next year.
