Funny week trade week!

Round 1, tipped bottom four.

20 weeks into the 2007 season most football people ie. media, opposition clubs and supporters, believed we were good enough to beat teams of the likes of, collingwood, St Kilda and Port in adelaide, but our young injury depleted side chose not to, which is the meaning of tanking! the last two were formality

Post season, people relaxed back into the modern theme of "their s**t.

Trade week comes along and everyone wants a piece of the navy blue??

Out it comes again..."THEIR CHEATING I SAY". "AND THEY TANKED"

My first point is, people from the outside, choose to look beyond facts. They scrape off any negative headline and throw it in your path! Pratt has a lot of money, yes! But he isn't buying us out of debit and into a grand final! He is returning the carlton brand to the premier football club in the country. Not out of his back pocket but through his brain.

Sponsership deals back and flowing, record membership, Best football dept, state of the art facilities in progress, a bunch of the best young talent in the land and the proudest history!

Are any of those reasons for players to want to play for our club? The whole AFL public knows were on the rise and their scarred!!

My second point is Paul Roos and Trevor Nissbet, pull your head's in!

Ok, this whole new topic has been fired by these two "perfect" people. Paul Roos, who left his troubled Lions in search of money and chance at a rise up the ladder at Sydney. A team who has never done anything but buy players from around the comp! What a nerve!

As for Nissbet, CHRIS JUDD was a PRIORITY pick no.3, BEFORE THE FIRST ROUND! you got him for being shit, as did we, you lost him for your own bad culture! we wont!

Don't worry Blue baggers, were coming, only this time i think its for real, the giant is awakening!!

Did any one else hear the one bout a team that won three outta five wooden spoons, recording the second greatest ever profit from a victorian club? recruiting the best player in the comp, and taking the no.1 pick?:D:D

Da dada dada

Never understand the tanking talk.

In the end we 100% tanked and I am more than happy we did.

When opposition supporters say ' u guys tanked' trying to get a reaction I simply say ' Yep and I am so proud we did' and in the same breath say ' Judd and Kruzcontrol'.

All gold. You forgot to mention record membership numbers ;)

I just love the simpe mindedness on BF from opposition supporters. Their little brains can only process what's in front of thier eyes. Headline says "Nisbet says carlton tanked" LETS GET ON THAT ONE! Everyone forgets how much crap was piled on to the Saints for having such high picks over a period of time and underachieving. Not to mention Collingwood tanking for Dale "Thomas the Tank Engine", Nth declaring mid last year that they were "preparing for next year" Bitchmond sacking their two best defenders this year in Callaway and Gasper so they could "give the kids a go", The Demons tanking in 2003 to take Colin Sylvia etc etc...

So the question is? who's gonna tank next year?

What do they define as 'tanking'?

You can tank when your losing, and we're not the only team to do so. Funny how Richmond supporters are giving us the shits about tanking when their coach admittedly stated that he felt compromised in the final game.

Tanking is a myth created by supporters in order to justify their team's mediocrity. I don't believe for a second players would go on the field with the intent to lose... take a look at our game vs Essendon, and their reactions and body language when they hit the end only to lose in the dying minutes.

It is nonsense, we are shit, not good enough on the day, and that's it.

Thanks to Lopezz, what was written was gold!!!

But let me add to this....and the football world take note.

The media, opposition teams and supporters claim Carlton tanked, but lets look at out 11 loses....

Carlton sat bottom 3 all year, pretty much with Melb and Richmond.....

In the last 11 games we played the following teams, in order from round 12 to 22 and points margin and ladder position at end of season;
Rd. 12 - Hawthorn lost by 100 (finished 5th)
Rd. 13 - Freo lost by 77 (finished 11th and the game was at Subi)
Rd. 14 - Melb lost by 23 (finished 14th)
Rd. 15 - Swans lost by 62 (finished 7th)
Rd. 16 - Brisbane lost by 117 (finished 10th)
Rd. 17 - St Kilda lost by 10 (finished 9th)
Rd. 18 - Collingwood lost by 24 (finished 6th)
Rd. 19 - Port lost by 23 (finished 2nd and played in GF)
Rd. 20 - Essendon lost by 10 (finished 12th)
Rd. 21 - Kangas lost by 82 (finished 4th)
Rd. 22 - Melbourne lost by 31 (finished 14th)

- Carlton played 5 top 8 teams (3 from top 5)
- Carlton played 4 teams that up until round 21 were fighting for a top 8 spot, and even up until round 22 were still fighting!!
- Carlton played Melb twice (which is wrong, how can you play the same team twice within 11 weeks, the AFL should be shot for that)
- So of the 11, 9 games we played potential finalists….hhhmmmm

So let me ask all those, who in their opinion Carlton tanked;
- Would you have expected and picked Carlton to win any of these matches?? - my guess is not!!!
- i'm pretty sure when you were all doing your tips you wouldn't have tipped Carlton because all the teams they were playing were in finals or were having a much better season and were stronger!!!....maybe in the 2 games against Melb but both were toss of the coin matches.

So how is Carlton tanking??? Was Richmond and Melb tanking?? cause if your theory applies to Carlton surely it applies to both Melb and Rich, but again i'm sure you weren't tipping those teams either, cause why would you they were playing teams BETTER than them!!!

Good post Blue History. Also take into consideration people's predictions of where we would finish in 2007 at the start of the year - the majority penciled us to get another spoon (that would usually imply less than 5 wins anyway) anyway. Even when meeting expectations of a low placed finish, they changed their tune from "yeah they're just crap" to "they tanked".

How convenient indeed.

Puts it all very nicely. Well done, some nice work. Now I can reply to taunts of tanking with my own: "Tell me the games we tanked? And you'd have tipped us that day?" Hats off BH.

That was my point:cool:

Combined with the two people who have put the most energy towards creating a fuss over carlton, are known advocates of tanking themselves!:thumbsu:

Well said.

In the end, while we wanted to win those games... we weren't realistically expected to win.

Lets all be completely honest, we didn't tank the last 11 games because we were probably bad enough to lose them. But, the games against Essendon and Melbourne(rd22) did have a few interesting rotations. My favourite one was when Waite started carving up the Mebourne defence and was suddenly benched.

We did what EVERY other team would have done if they were in our position - we did what was best for our LONG TERM future.

Filth, scum and ninthmond supporters can all go and get flucked cos We are the Blues with one major difference - JUDD.

Can someone please fing AWG and ask her if she would have preferred us to have beaten the Filth or got Judd and kept pick one. Ask her if Judd will bring a Winning culture.

Just to add to that:

- Our 11 game losing streak commenced with a nightmare schedule; travelling 3 times in 4 weeks. Even at the start of the year, I predicted that could potentially unravel our season, given the effect a couple of crushing losses could have on our confidence. 4 losses by more than 10 goals in 5 weeks - I can't imagine what effect that had on young kids tired after a brutal schedule
- Our first loss to Melbourne came smack in the middle of that patch. We were coming back from Perth, and coming off two straight shellackings.
- Our closest game was against St Kilda. When was the last time we beat the Saints? 2001? Its a miracle we weren't beaten by 100 in that game - they match up against us better than anyone in the comp
- After St Kilda, we lost 2 games from winning positions; against second and fourth! Anyone who expects the second-worst team in the competition to win close final quarters against top 4 teams (one match interstate) is completely and incurably nuts
- We then lost to an Essendon team doing the Kevin Sheedy farewell tour. Oh, and we played the game with 4th-gamer Michael Jamison as our best matchup for Matthew Lloyd. Not exactly favoured to win...
- North Melbourne finished third, and duely pumped us by 82 points
- Melbourne beat us fair and square in the last round. Had Whitnall kicked straight, we might have won. But he didn't because his body was shot, and we have sinced sacked him. Of course, Melbourne had less incentive to tank this (because it cost them pick 20, whereas a win would have cost us pick 1). But they also arguably underperformed this season, and started to improve towards the end of the year, whereas we performed pretty much as expected.

Isn't it funny also that none of the teams we played in the last six rounds have come out and said we tanked? its only those with personal agenda's like Roos, Nissbett and now Miller.

.....and who read Ms Caroline Wilson's article in the Sunday Age?

Talk about coming in off the long run.

Her fear and hatred of Carlton is her motivating force.

quote:

Not only was Brett Ratten a great player, a former captain and an impressive person, he had all the right friends in all the right places. And he coached the team according to instruction; showing the football world his players would perform for him but never quite well enough to actually win a game.
The Blues tanked most of the season's second half, made a mockery of the competition and have secured not only the best player in the AFL but a priority pick.

*queue thunder from mount..........................*

I ask all these sages, where is your evidence?
Where is your smoking gun?
Where are the disclaimers whereby they compare us with other clubs in similar positions in other years?
Where are you Andrew Demetriou allowing these hypocrites to slander the club we love?
And finally Caroline, I ask, where will you be next year when your beloved Richmond win 4 games?

*end thunder*

I know some of you reckon we did tank, I really can't see it. We have finshed lowly for 6 years now. Why did you think we could suddenly pick and choose how many we win in a year?

She started off reasonably well... but then her hatred of Carlton shone through and she really decided to try and sink in the slipper in the end.

Not following due process when interviewing for the new coach. We interviewed 3 people during that time and Ratts won out in the end. I think that Ratts vision for the future of the club was a little more closely inline with the visions that Dick and the boys had for the club than the other applicants.

But hey... why let little things like facts get in the way of a good kicking when it comes to Carlton.

Of course we tanked the last 6 matches. We could quite easily have won 4-5 of those matches. We were in a great position in 3 of them and somehow, miraculous, our stats halve in the last 10 minutes and we get outscored 3 or 4 goals to nil. Became very predictable. Other than Melbourne this year, no side has ever won just 1 game beyond the priority pick limit since it come in. How many people actually thought we'd win, or wanted us to win the last game against Melbourne? Must be co-incidence. It's not about not believing we tanked, it's more about not wanting to believe.

I don't think we tanked at all....those boys played their guts out, sure the coaching staff might have pulled a few moves, but lets look at it;
- was the microscope out more because we were looking for signs of tanking, things we wouldn't have looked at early in the season
- over the past 6 years when haven't teams out scored Carlton in the last
- up to round 12 Carlton were the worst 4th quarter team, so why were people surprised by us getting beaten in the last for the last 12 games
- sure we had the opportunity to win a couple but how do young kids handle the pressure of those games against experience teams, just look at Hirds last quarter against us??
