With Biglands finding a bit of around the ground form, should he be dropping back across the half-back line to chop out Hall's leads?

Hall gets a lot of marks on the lead, and while Rutten might go with him in the one-on-one's, I imagine Hall's pace will leave Rutten (and most of our other defenders) behind.

So if Biglands fills 'the hole' in front of Hall's leads, we may be able to negate his influence (ala Brogan against Gehrig last weekend).

Just a thought.

Or Rutten can have a chat to Bassett to find out how he plays Hall. As you say spinny Hall gets a lot of his marks on the lead and thats why Bassett plays well on him. Bassett plays Hall from the front and cutting of his space to lead into, frustrating BBBB. If Rutten plays Hall from the front he will do fine on him ;)

Dropping Biglands back is another option.

Hall has improved his contested marking a lot this season, particularly the last few weeks. A big part of the answer to containing him is the same as what worked on Neitz last week - midfield pressure. If we get the pressure on Sydney like we did Melbourne then it makes it hard for the midfielders to deliver the ball precisely into the forward line.

Good point. No FB can stop his man getting a bag of goals if the ball is delivered lace out, due to a lack of mid-field pressure.

Naturally the reverse holds as well.

Interesting point here. But remember that Hall is more of a CHF and Neitz is a FF. This means that if there is a lot of midfield pressure, Hall will come out of the 50m line and go as far as he needs to mark the ball.

Also, the SCG is a short ground, allowing Leo Barry, Kennelly, Crouch and Mathews to run out of the back line and from there, they are in kicking distance to CHF already.

... or Bassett playing on a "lesser" dangerous player, could help double team Hall where possible.

Well Craig has stated that Rutten will stand Hall.

So there is no further debate on that point...

Why would he publicly announce such a key matchup days ahead of the game? Has he not heard of such a thing as foxing? - you'd hope he is.

Ruttens going to become a good player once he gets some experience under his belt, he still needs to work on his pace, but im confident he'll end up a good player. Barry Hall kicked 4 goals but hey what can you do its Barry Hall, Ben made a few mistakes but hes still learning, this was his 5th game wasnt it? And If I remember correctly this is his first spell playing down back in the AFL.

In the last 2 weeks my admiration of Ben Rutten has grown more and more.

I think he has the right to feel a little bit unlucky. Hall kicked 4 goals 2 of which I would say he pulled out of his backside. I was impressed with how Rutten went about his business and if he can improve his agility I reckon we have a FB who we can play on big forwards. Yes he made some mistakes but hell I thought he did a good job on Hall despite BBBB kicking 4 goals.

Truck has shown there is something there to work with and with FB more that probably with any other position experience is every thing. With a few more games under his belt and a bit more experince and improved agility, Rutten can turn into a very solid AFL FB ala Prestigiacomo.

In couple of weeks time he will have his biggest test on Lynch. I will be watching that with interest.

I don't think Lynch will be as big a test at all. He is slower and less agile than Hall.

However he is stronger, so that will be interesting. But Rutten is a tank and should be the strongest player we've played on Lynch in yonks...
