move on ffs, I'll say one thing in RT defence he is a bloody decent young man. He was the inspiration behind fed government funding for an indigineous centre at punt rd, a legacy that will live long after RTs time in the game. Sure his career didnt unfold like we all hoped nut unlike a couple of his bro it wasnt through lack of trying...he did his best, sadly flaws in his game held him back from becoming an elite player at senior level...let him be, i hope he goes ok

Right on the money Bojangles17. I would also add that there could well have been something or lack of in the clubs development of young players as RT was not the only promising young player to arrive at Tigerland and leave with some dissappointment at how their time played out.

I reckon he has enough talent to be a very good AFL player and at times has shown this. But he just doesn't put it together consistently. Adelaide took him for a reason, which he might fulfill.
But I reckon we have done well out of it and potentially will be way ahead if the compo pick can get us a pick in the GWS mini draft.

Thats what gets me though, how come we can't nurture the young talent as effectively as other clubs? Maybe buddy wouldn't be as good if we got him lol.

get with the program dude. Cotch, Martin, Rance, JR, Grimes etc....we can nurture young talent, but the young talent need to have one important thing --- TALENT. Tambling was good when he played junior footy but thats where it ended. THe big time found him out, just like it has others. ;)

When he says that the comparison to Buddy go to him, its hard to know to what extent he experienced it.

If it was simply reading it in a paper yet still being at a club where people were imploring him to forget about who he was drafted ahead of then it would come across a bit mentally fragile.

But it may be that people bring it up at every club event he turns up to.

Possible that some players may have reminded him of it. Every club has the odd player/s who can be a prick when it comes to how they put things.

Im sure more than once a supporter has let him know while doing something as simple as going to the supermarket.

It would be interesting to know how often he is reminded of it and in what way before passing judgement as to whether it is mentally fragile to be affected by the comparison.

time to move on, but if anyone was to ask me - i'd have to say that RFC failed Tambling.

He clearly had the potential, the club at the time was the wrong one for him.

Agree with this.
He was pretty good in 2009 when he was 22 years old. (20 games, 430 disp, 8 goals, 63 tackles) but played for a club that won 5 games. Then injury got him. Best comparison would be Travis Varcoe at Geelong.(Varcoe -23 years old- in 2011 24games, 389 disposals, 31 goals, 51 tackles).
On a side note, like every pick in the draft there have been some interesting Pick 4's in the Draft in the last 15 years!
1996 Sydney - Mark Kinnear 6 games
1998 Sydney Ryan Fitzgerald 18 games
2000 Carlton Luke Livingstone 46 games
2002 Western Bulldogs Tim Walsh 1 game
2003 Western Bulldogs Farran Ray 55 games for Dogs
2007 Melbourne Cale Morton 67 games

thats a tough one spag, im not sure the RFC failed RT, there's really no case for that other than speculative opinion. RT had some flaws in his game as in ordinary ball handling, less than average decision making and average at best disposal that was always going to hold him back...varcoe doesnt looked to be flawed in these key areas. i dont hold it against RT he did his best and like so many before him it wasnt good enough

The greatest problem with Richie lay between his ears. His finishing was always a problem even in juniour years. His mind however wreaked havoc on his game. He just cant get over the Buddy legacy!

perhaps to a fair degree YB however his shortcomings were fundamental as in decision making, poor disposal and poor ball handling, irrespective of the club environment they couldnt have been wallpapered over at the elite level

I still hold high hopes that he'll come good for us, but footy aside, he really has impressed most of us as an individual.

I always thought he was lazy and soft (don't know why, just assumed it was why he hadn't delivered on his obvious talent); he's neither of those things, and the way he conducts himself off of the field is first class.

He's always been a first-class individual, very articulate and of great character. The thing is, he can play too. He just doesn't have things right above the shoulders confidence wise and if he doesn't have that right by now, 7 years in the system, he never will.

Yep. He became my 8 year old daughter's favourite player after one of the Richmond family days. Just seems like a really nice bloke. Hope it works out well for him with the Crows.
