In lieu of a thread on the main board in which several of the usual suspects have staunchly defended our purported "tanking" in round 22 2007, I thought I would open the discussion on our own board.

Who believes we tanked in 2007? Who believes we didn't?

In my view we obviously did and rightly so - the means justified the ends in securing MK, pick 3 and ultimately Judd. Collingwood tanked in 05. Melb tanked in 09. Richmond just suck.

I don't see why there is such stigma associated with it? If you design the system like the AFL has a club must do everything they can to win a flag as only flags count. If that means losing some games along the way to get better draft picks I am all for it.

So I think some of our supporters need to grow up, except that as a club we tanked and stop excusing what is a commonly practised tactic to rebuild a club's list for a tilt at the ultimate!

why? I think it is a genuine question - do you care if you win 4 games in 07 if you win a flag in 2012?

Or would you prefer to win 5 games in 07 and not win a flag until 2015?

It goes hand in hand with my view that all a club should be focused on is the next flag.

If I was geelong I would have traded all the guns over 25 for draft picks and tried to load up again.

If I was running our club Watson would play CHB all year next year. Hendo would be guaranteed 22 games at CHF. If he was physically ready I would play Mitchell in the last 5 home and away games.

The flag is all that matters.

We tanked.
Dont regret it.
Every club down the bottom is involved in some form of tanking. Some clubs just like to sugar coat it to make themselves feel better..

Relevant and timely topic. Those who don't wish to discuss it should go post in another thread.......

.....on another topic......anyone notice Callum Chambers time for the time trial? WOW.....this guy is gonna tear it up....mark my words.

Can't wait to see him "tear it up" in Rnd 1 BB :p

I was at the M. Kreuzer Cup match. It was plain as day and completely unprovable in a court of law. Consequently your question has as much chance of confirmation either way as a question on the existence of God. This leaves more endless speculation and opinion of which their has already been plenty.

I prefer the term 'player management' TBH. Unless someone hears a coach specifically say to a player or players 'don't win today boys because we need to improve our position in the draft' it doesn't happen. Even Roos who was purportedly caught saying something similar called 'tongue in cheek'.

So a club plays some youngsters to get games into them (how else do they get senior experience), or sends players off early to have surgery (prudent if you're out of the finals race and want a clean start next season), or plays players out of position (gaining experience, game knowledge etc).

Just about every club would have done the above at some time.

Having said that taking away the priority pick would be a good idea (are they doing that?) as bar compromised drafts the worst team gets rewarded with the chance to pick the best potential, don't see why they need to be rewarded with two chances.

So in summary, non issue for me.

On a side note what I have found interesting on bigfooty is that Carlton seem to get a disproportionate amount of grief about tanking when you could use the word in conjunction with a number of clubs in recent times.

The Tanking Ladder.

1. StKilda.
Still the biggest episode of tanking we've ever seen. Was a while back now, but it lasted for 4+ years. Aided by the AFL who were trying to get this 26 spoon basketcase up from the bottom.

2. Hawthorn
A concentrated 3 year tank-a-thon. It was so extreme the AFL had to change the PP rules because of the systematic rorting by the Hawks

3. Pies
We all remember the Pie 2005 Tank-a-Thon. 1/2 of the list was booked in for end-of-season surgery before the 1/2 way mark

4. Dees
Rorted the system for 2.5 years. It was a very aggressive tanking campaign, because they had the compromised draft deadline.

5. Weagles
Tanked one year, but it had no impact because the Weagles generally make terrible draft decisions.

6. Richmond
Terry Wallace admitted to throwing a game a few years back. The problem was he used the pick to secure McMahon!

:)

These two examples in particular resulted us being completely screwed over in 2006 where we ended up our Priority Pick being at the end of the First Round instead of at the beginning (We wound up with Picks 1, 17 & 19) Instead of Picks 1, 3 & 17).

This was so manifestly unjust to us as being tantamount to being as bad for us as our Draft Penalties in 2002.

We had manifestly the worst list of any AFL side in 2005 and 2006 and were clearly the worst team in the competition but because Collingwood and Hawthorn completely rorted the system during that time - the AFL changed the rules for Priority Pick Qualification whilst we were in mid-stream of qualifying for the Priority Pick in 2006.

It was completely unjust unfair and unwarranted and burns me up to this day even more than Black Friday 2002.

This is why I have no problem with what we did in Round 22 of 2007.

Yep, the AFL totally shafted us again. I don't think that fat clown running the AFL likes us much. No matter, we're back now, bigger and stronger than ever. #17 is going to be sweet.

Carlton cop it because we got 3 number 1 draft picks in a row. Any questions over any match in any given year, seems to prove that we tanked every single year. The way people are milling around that other thread saying that everybody tanks, you wonder what the excuse for poorly performed teams was prior to the draft coming in. It seems nobody is genuinely poor anymore.

ODN to the extent I agree with you. Some teams lose just because they suck!

But I guess what I am trying to say is that I think the concept of tanking is now basically a list management tool! No need for everyone to jump up and down about it (as they are doing on the main board).

Parrot listed enough examples to show that at least 6 other teams have tanked in the last 10 years. It is now commonplace!

Umm, stupid question, but what is this thread talking about tanking on the "main board" ??? I can't see anything about tanking on the main board ............

Tanking is commonly accepted in the nfl/nba. It is seen as smart business. As a previous poster stated we are in the game to win flags. Respectable 15ths don't cut it at our club. IMO we were shizen anyway. Opposition supporters make it sound like we had come off multiple flags and just decided to lose on purpose to cop some high draft picks rather then fight, that couldn't be further from the truth. We were the worst team for a long long time.
We came, we saw, we tanked.

Now we will conquer!
