Tas Clingan

Have a look down a bit, theres a few threads on him. He has been named in the extended Coburg seniors squad so hopefully he plays, the game is on tomorrow on the ABC from 1pm

He's only 18 while the rest of our rookies are at least 20.

He needs time.
Why is it that all our kids 'need time'?
Collingwood kids get picked and make an impact straight away and I mean straight away.
**** this 'need time' shit. Gone are the old VFL days when a Michael Tuck or a Dipper could play 80 reserves games before making their debut.
You either got it or you haven't and it's pretty freaking obvious right from the word go. We armchair bums can tell so why can't the powers that be?
All the talk about whether Kelvin Moore will make it...blah blah...he needs time. Bullshit. He's not up to it. Danny Meyer...he needs time. Yes he might need a bit of time to decide which SANFL club to play for next season, but that's about it.
Turn them over until you get a Marty Clarke and it will become all too obvious when we do. Polo did it last year. Some on this board can't tell it yet, but he is one who will have a major impact in years to come.
Phoenix, not having a go at you, but this is why we need three picks in the top 20 this year and we need to use them wisely. Huge November coming up for our club. If we don't get it right this time, well, the fat lady is airing her tonsils as we speak.

See Weaver's post:

This is the grass-is-greener effect.

Tyson Goldsack has 66 touches from 6 games.
Shannon Cox has 77 from 6.
Danny Stanley 18 touches in 2 games.
Alan Toovey 94 touches in 9 games.
Brad Dick has 50 touches and 4 goals in 6 games.
Sam Iles 53 touches in 5 games.
Ben Reid, 4 marks, 7 touches, 1 goal on debut.

Encouraging debuts but hardly "impact" particularly for rebounding HBFs which is what most of them are. Certainly King has matched them. Shane Edwards with 60 from 7 matches them.

'Immediate' impact Stanley, Toovey, Iles and Cox are all 2nd-year guys who couldn't crack a game last year.

Dale Thomas has 9 goals from his 13 games. He is averaging 10.5 kicks, 6 marks and 5 handballs. Deledio has 9 goals from his 13 games. 10.2 kicks, 6 marks, 9 handballs. Hard to see how Thomas is kicking butt and Deledio struggling.

See Weaver's post:
Thomas makes things happen from nothing. has an X-factor.
Clarke looks like he's played 80 games and has lived in suburban Melbourne all his life.
Goldsack has the composure of a veteran.
Mere stats can't depict a certain unspoken something that everyone can see, but can't put a finger on.

Meyer(20?), Moore(23?) dont need time, I agree, they have HAD time and wasted it.

IMO Hughes and Jack dont need time anymore, they need AFL games, and the ones where they're only on for 40% of the time!

Tas Clingan is a 18 year old who needs muscle. Thats why he needs time. Apart from Marty, all those Maggies boys are second year-ers I think. Not to mention Tas is a rookie so not expected to switch it on right away like Danny Meyer should have.

So we hang onto him until he becomes a 23-year-old Moore?
Two years maximum. If you're not doing anything, out the door.

As he is a rookie, although its harsh, he shouldn't be given as much time to develop as the rest of the blokes. He ain't a Key Posistion player so he should one year after this. If at the end of next year he is in the side/on the verge of being in the side/showing a heap of promise he should then be included. He really needs to get same games at Coburg seniors though

Good point.

We would have got rid of Raines and pettifer. Collingwood would have dumped Heath shaw. Port would have dumped salopek. Malcheski would have never played for Sydney. Winderlich and watson would be gone. Could name plenty more.

If one of our young KP players had this return in their first 3 years at our club do you think we should keep him on and give him more time or should we give him the arse?

Year 1: 4 games 7.8 disposals 2.5 marks 1 tackle 0.5 goals a game
Year 2: 15 games 8.5 disposals 3.5 marks 1.5 tackles 0.9 goals per game
Year 3: 13 games 7.2 disposales 2.2 marks 0.7 tackles 0.5 goals per game

BTW these are actual stats from a players first 3 years not some random made up figures. Because by those figures as a young KP they are not something that exactly sets the world on fire and makes you think they are going to be a star. Just because players don't tear it up from day one does not mean they wont turn out to be very good players.

Did I say that? :thumbsd:
I was illustrating a point. Obviously went over your head.
So what would you do with Clingan then? He's a rookie listed player playing reserves.
You gotta keep turning your list over quickly. We've kept players on our list hoping they will come good for too long now. CoggaRules said something a week or so back that when you delist a player and pick another one up, you're at least trying to find the right mix. That's the key word: 'trying' not 'hoping'. 'Hope' is all we've had for 25 years and it hasn't worked.

You give him two years to show he can become an AFL player, at that point he will be 19.

If he was a rookie and 21 and playing VFL reserves or even seniors with no hope he wouldnt get another year but for an 18 year old Im happy to keep him as a rookie for one more year.

So after all that, we agree on the two years thing?

lmao yeah pretty much. :p I never said otherwise, there is a time you wait but you wait forever. Hello Meyer. :)

Except I'd would consider giving him a 3rd year if he had alot of promise in the VFL, i.e. High in B&F.

Which is exactly why I opposed giving Tambling a three-year contract.

High draft picks are a tad different because so much faith is placed in them they are assumed to be great. RFC were clearly too keen and shouldve gave him only 2 so he's playing for contracts and never feeling safe. :thumbsu:

has been ok so far today. looks composed when he gets the ball and so far hasn't fumbled in very slippery conditions.

this kid is not to bad....plays safe and makes minimal errors...that is a very good
sign. Because he can go up from this step and play risky and not make errors and we have a player. ;)

sheesh we are impatient when it comes to our kids.
there are two things that seem to be common with our recruits. the vast majority are super skinny they will take longer to stamp themselves as playaers weather they are at coburg or have shown enough to get a senior game or two. the other is theres not a lot of quality size or experience around them at coburg or richmond. its like asking a junior lightweight to step into the ring with a super middleweight.

just on moore was promoted to the list at the end of 2004. so in effect this is his third yr. he has some awesome tools for a bloke his size so i can see why we have kept him. but in saying this he has to show he can go to the next level or go to another level or be delisted at yrs end. with lists of 44 you can only wait for so long.
