I just run a ruler over the competition Team Tracker Stats for 2017/18 on the AFL site. I will pad them out below but what is really evident is our players were working much harder and doing a lot more running in 2017 than in 2018. Stats show competition Top 25 efforts over the 2 seasons.
1. Average speed of all players while team possession = Nil in top 25 listed.
Note: Not working hard enough on the turnover when in possession.
2. Average speed of all players while opposition has possession = 1st Rd 1 2017
& 19th Rd 6 2018.
3. Total distance by all players covered = 21st Rd 15 2017.
4. Total distance by all players above 18k/h = 1st Rd 14 2017 & 9 games in top 25 in 2017, one in 2018.
Note: 2017 work rates were thru the roof but were they working efficiently?
5. Player Total Distance @ speed = Nil.
6. Top player speed = 2nd Savage 37.1 k/h 2018 & 11th Ross 35.0k/h 2017
7. Players average speed = 5 in top 25 all in 2017.
3rd Gilbert 21.1 k/h,
11th Steele 18.2,
14th Minchington 17.7,
18th K. Stevens 17.3,
20th McKenzie 17.2,
J. Steven 17.0.
8. Sprint efforts total = nil.
9. Repeat sprint efforts = Again 5 in top 25 all in 2017.
2nd Acres 12
5th Webster 11
10th Sinclair 10
19th Ross 9
24th Lonie 9
10. Workrate Ave speed when in possession = 5th Gilbert 26.0 2017
11. Workrate opposition in possession =
6 in top 25 again all in 2017.
3rd J. Steven 23.1
4th S. Gilbert 22.7
15th Carlisle 18.8
21st Roberton 18.2
22nd Webster 18.1
23rd Wright 18.1
I havent had a chance to see if the 2017 stats corresponded with more possessions, but they definitely corresponded with more scores and wins.
They other thing the stats explains is why at times during 2017 the team looked like they had hit the wall like marathon runners. Particularly after Round 16.
