Telstra Dome it is. What a shocking name. I will keep calling it Colonial Stadium because the name "Telstra Dome" is a disgrace.

When does it start?

Colonial Stadium, while being a sponsored name, actually sounded good. It actually sounded like it could be a non-commercial name of the venue. Telstra Dome just sounds tacky.

Dome is way too American, it wouldn't be just the ABC ignoring it if that were the name. May as well call it a ballpark.

I personally like something involving the name Bigpond, vould become a nickname. The G, The pond, Elliotts folly etc

One question. If the whole stadium is under cover - why have glass on the corporate boxes ?

To keep the heating/air conditioning in the room, to give the corporates privacy or in case the roof is open one day.

To stop the seats from cracking and fading -
from the latest Crikey.com.au subber email:

Medallion club seat holders at Telstra Theatre in Melbourne (as of Monday) are up in arms over the "weathering" of their $5,000 per year for five years seats.

And a barney has broken out, so they say, between the builders of the stadium, Baulderstone, and the seat manufacturer, over who is to blame (and who will pay!).

The story goes that the seat manufacturers wanted a higher grade polycarbonate, but the builders are said to have gone for the cheaper "indoor" version - because Colonial has a roof!

Note to Builder - as Bill Casimaty of StrathAyr will tell you, a footy stadium relies on grass, and to get it to grow you need the roof OPEN.

Regardless of the frustrated Medallion Club members' views, they can't get their $25k seats repaired - because there aren't any spares! Replacements will be made, so we hear, but they won't be available this season.

And I agree "Telstra Dome" is a crap name that makes it sound like it should be in Melbourne, Florida. I guess they had to go for Telstra "Dome" because they're also taking over the naming rights for Stadium Australia, which presumably is going to become Telstra Stadium or Stadium Telstra. Yuck.

full press release

The Seven Network today welcomed Telstra’s commitment to Telstra Dome – a commitment which will underline the future development of Australia’s leading sports and entertainment precinct.

Seven today also acknowledged the partnership with Colonial, which allowed the creation of a new stadium for the Australian Football League and a closed-roof venue for major sports and entertainment events.

The naming rights partnership with Telstra is one of the most significant sponsorship commitments undertaken in Australia.

Seven looks forward to further building its long-term partnership with Telstra – across Telstra Dome and future events at the venue, the Seven Network and the company’s magazine business.

Commenting, the Executive Chairman of Seven Network Limited, Mr Kerry Stokes, said: “We acknowledge Telstra’s strong support for what will soon be known as Telstra Dome.

“We believe that together, Seven and Telstra will build on the successes of Melbourne’s leading sports and entertainment venue, as we build stronger links with the Australian Football League, create and manage major entertainment events, and look forward to Telstra Dome’s role in forthcoming events, including the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

“We also wish to thank Colonial Limited who shared our commitment to a new sports and entertainment venue in Melbourne and have supported the project from its initial concepts, through construction and the stadium’s first three years. It has been an outstanding partnership, and we thank them for their support.”

Background

Telstra Dome is the home of the Australian Football League and the Brownlow Medal, and with anchor tenants, Essendon, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs, hosts more than 40 matches a year. The Carlton Football club has committed to playing four home matches at the stadium in 2002 – for a total of eight matches at Colonial in season 2002.

The venue has also been host to the Wallabies rugby union test matches in Melbourne and will host all Rugby World Cup matches played in Melbourne in 2003.

Telstra Dome has created a series of world firsts, with Australian football matches, rugby union internationals, rugby league and international cricket matches, and next month’s world wrestling all played under the world’s largest closing roof.

The venue has also established new benchmarks in entertainment events, hosting performances from some of the world’s major international artists, including Bon Jovi and Ricky Martin, and will host the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rumba and M1 concerts during this summer.

If its got a roof, the title of dome is appropriate.

I am opening a telecommunications company and calling it "Super Highway Info-transfer Technology" or S.H.|.T.

I intend to bid against Telstra for naming rights at Colonial cos quite frankly I think "The Sh|t-House" is a far better name for it.

Its better than what it was orginially going to be called, "Vodadome" sponsored by vodafone. What a joke that would have been.
Mind you, its still a joke....
Aami stadium, Telstra dome and Skilled stadium.....gee whiz...Wonder if our MCG will keep its name for much longer

"With the two venues hosting events such as State of Origin rugby league, Tri Nations and other rugby internationals, the Telstra premiership NRL grand final and AFL finals, we expect a good return on our investment through sellout stadium crowds and huge local and global TV audiences."

Quote from the Age.

Good to see AFL comes a distant last in the thought processes at Telstra....

Dome? Say what? Makes me want to turn it upside down and shake it to see the pretty snowflakes.

What's next, the McG?

I'm still amazed that Telstra can spend millions of dollars on this then put our phone bills up.
Yeah, but they have competition now, so they have to advertise. They have an obligation to their shareholders and they wouldn't be spending it if they didn't think it worthwhile.

I still like my Telstradium idea!!
