Im not sure how many people out there have heard about Terry Wallaces idea to introduce an award system in AFL football.

Roughly, each game will be worth $100,000 to the winner, coming from a pool of money from the AFL's broadcasting rights.

The system would "help restore the integrity of the game" by deterring teams to bottom out for better draft picks. If your team is good enough to win games then they can get financial rewards. If they finnish towards the bottom of the ladder there will less financial reward, but higher draft picks incidentally.

I have to say i loved the idea when i first heard it explained on White Line Fever a couple of weeks ago. However the AFL say it has little chance of ever coming into fruition.

This is disapointing in that this kind of system could ensure longterm security for struggling clubs, especially victorian ones.

If this kind of system was introduced, clubs in debt would be capable of winning themselves out of debt over a number of seasons. Sure, last year carlton only won 4 matches, which would be worth 400,000 to the club, but every bit helps.

A team that makes the final 8, with roughly 11 wins, takes home $1.1 million. In 2004 carlton could have secured $1 million from 10 wins. Not bad eh?

What do you think? Would this kind of system be beneficial for struggling teams such as ours? And if this kind of system was introduced, how much more important would each game be to the club?

Didn't see the episode of WLF during the week, but I can't see it happening. Like you said yourself, if a club only wins a few games a year, like Carlton did last year, they might only get $400,000 a year.

I'm assuming that system replaces the gate receipts system, and that would surely be a lot less than what clubs receive from their gate receipts.

i like the idea of rewarding wins with money, in addition to what we currently have in place

BUT no team goes out to lose,

let's face that facts

we are not very good. we have players with potential but many of these players have not fullfilled their potential.

we lack depth, a couple of injuries and we can't cover them

and we are seriously undermaned. (due to many reasons past and present)

we lack a quality ruckmen
lack explosive pace in the midfield
lack a hard nut midfielder
lack a big, strong KP backmen

Could be risky...

eg
1. Teams playing to win... our forum would self implode as those that keep pushing "play-the-kids" line would self distruct like a lemming, as $$$$ we need and the board would never select kids over experience.

2. During trade period it would be more financially viable to give away early draft picks to perhaps lure more experienced players that will assist with wins today as opposed to wins tomorrow.

3. Teams that are successful at the initial implementation of this idea will become to financially mighty and could use extra under the table financial insentives to lure the best of the crop.

I like how Wallace thinks outside the square... the only thing I think should happen is a $1000000 cheque for winning the flag as opposed to the nothing they get now!

For crying out-loud a Tennis player needs to win 7 games in a row in a grand-slam to make a 7 figure sum. Here you have 22 men for 26 weeks needing to win at least 15 games of a full contact sport and numerous coaches, assistants, support staff... etc etc... and the league gives them bugger all!

GO BLUES!

As i recall, the gate receipts would still be in place. However they would be made more evenly spread accross the AFL. This would lessen the killings that collingwood and essendon continually make. So as well as the gate receipts, there would be the added win bonus.

Also, i agree with more money for premiership teams. The amount they get from beating every other team is pitiful. An entire 8 months of work comes down to an insignificant prize.

I can appreciate the idea of it being risky but is it really? I mean, if you choose to play experienced plyaers over the kids then yes initially you will reap the $$$ rewards, however, the experienced players get older and young teams start running over the top of them, and the older teams start losing, head towards the bottom of the ladder and no longer reap the $$$ and are forced to blood the young kids for the future.

I think the idea has merit and the AFL should at least investigate further.
