Im not sure how many people out there have heard about Terry Wallaces idea to introduce an award system in AFL football.
Roughly, each game will be worth $100,000 to the winner, coming from a pool of money from the AFL's broadcasting rights.
The system would "help restore the integrity of the game" by deterring teams to bottom out for better draft picks. If your team is good enough to win games then they can get financial rewards. If they finnish towards the bottom of the ladder there will less financial reward, but higher draft picks incidentally.
I have to say i loved the idea when i first heard it explained on White Line Fever a couple of weeks ago. However the AFL say it has little chance of ever coming into fruition.
This is disapointing in that this kind of system could ensure longterm security for struggling clubs, especially victorian ones.
If this kind of system was introduced, clubs in debt would be capable of winning themselves out of debt over a number of seasons. Sure, last year carlton only won 4 matches, which would be worth 400,000 to the club, but every bit helps.
A team that makes the final 8, with roughly 11 wins, takes home $1.1 million. In 2004 carlton could have secured $1 million from 10 wins. Not bad eh?
What do you think? Would this kind of system be beneficial for struggling teams such as ours? And if this kind of system was introduced, how much more important would each game be to the club?
