I haven't read the real paper in ages. Pleasantly surprised by the game stats table.

What struck me was our team had more green.... 30% above season average rankings and out performing in KPIs. And A lot of Freo players had red, 30% below season average. We brought our A game in a lot of areas.

Areas of concern.... They took 12 intercept marks. Our disposal eff...... possibly impacted heavily by missing set shots at goal.

Not sure if we want or need this, but seeing as I'm the self proclaimed Statman, I decided to do it anyway. I'll update our stats every week.

Some interesting player stats;
  • Thommo ranked 4th and Danger 5th for contested possessions/game
  • Danger ranked 5th in the AFL for tackles.
  • Ten goal Tom out-assisting Eddie Extraordinary with 11 compared to 9.
  • I noticed that the goal accuracy given on AFL.com.au includes non scoring shots on goal. I'm trying to work out how to get this data into the tables. Hopefully tomorrow.

Areas of concern.... They took 12 intercept marks. Our disposal eff...... possibly impacted heavily by missing set shots at goal.
Actually they took 18 intercept marks

Actual score vs Expected score hurts

So, after Round 9 ....

r9.png

The upset columns show who is kind of in the wrong position on the ladder compared with their results ... Collingwood / Richmond look over-rated by their ladder position AND Port / Geelong look under rated.

For the following rankings I do a little calculation comparing their average rank of who each tea is playing / has played with the average of all the other teams. This gives a bit of relevance to each teams ranking (ie if you are 1st the average rank of the other teams is 10, whereas the 18th ranked team means the other teams average rank is 9)

Who has had the easiest run compared to their ladder position so far?

Up to R9
Collingwood 1 easiest
Richmond 2
Brisbane 3
West Coast 4
Hawthorn 5
St Kilda 6
GWS Giants 7

Gold Coast 9

Fremantle 12
Carlton 13
North Melbourne 14
Geelong 15
Port Adelaide 16

Western Bulldogs 18 toughest

Seems strange but check out the two ends of the ladder:
Collingwood (4th on the ladder) have played - 7,8,10,12,13,14,16,18,17 (avg = 12.778)
Western Bulldogs (9th on the ladder) have played - 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,14,15 (avg = 6.778)

For the record AFC are 7th on the ladder and have played - 1,4,5,9,11,13,14,15,17 (avg 9.889)

So who gets the best run coming home compared to ladder position?

Remember this is a snap shot that changes after every round - the bigger the swings in the ladder the more it changes everything ... so it makes more sense after the bye.

But - the same things are showing up.

Clubs with upside - Port, Bulldogs, GWS
Clubs with downside - Richmond, West Coast, Collingwood

AFC are sitting about right at this stage :)

That is spectacular stuff OOTC. You should send it in to the AFL inquirer and try to get some royalties.

Small moves make big changes to this chart :-) Games that may have been upsets before swing around to being expected when a few ladder positions change.

The greyed out are the highs and lows, which are only slightly different to the rankings below (which take into account where each team is currently on the ladder). Again the upsets show teams that are maybe out of place on the current ladder.

Can see a few standouts above - Collingwood and West Coast had an easy run so far - Hawks not as high as you would expect considering the easy-ish draw so far - WB have played their toughest games already and are positioned better than their current ladder #.

And for the remainder of the season ...

WB get some reprieve and should bounce back in the second half, as North could do - Richmond / Collingwood / West Coast will be tested to see if they are pretenders or not.

And just for the laugh of it, the season ranks based on the current ladder - always fun to look at at the end of the season to see who got the gift draw and who got reamed !!!

Yep - as the teams settle into their proper ladder positions - lots of the old stats get switched on their heads :-)

In my brief experience looking at these numbers it only really shows up the outliers this early in the season ... like Collingwood, West Coast, North and the Bulldogs for instance.

Bulldogs have only played Saints and Demons ranked in the bottom 8.
North have played Essendon, Geelong, Port and Brisbane in the bottom 8. (Geelong and Port are probably under-ranked a bit as they have had the 3rd and 4th toughest draw so far)
West Coast have only played GWS and Freo ranked in the top 8 (both at home)
Collingwood have only played Adelaide and Richmond ranked in the top 8. (both at home)

I would say that Collingwood / West Coast are currently over-ranked and Western Bulldogs / North under-ranked.

With 2 wins separating 3rd and 12th, I reckon a few big moves are on the cards for the second half of the season.

Not sure if we want or need this, but seeing as I'm the self proclaimed Statman, I decided to do it anyway. I'll update our stats every week.

Some interesting team stats;
  • Score ratio per i50 improved compared to our opponents due to Saturday, but behinds don't win us games.
  • We are ranked 10th for 1%ers so far (spoils, shepherds). This is something I think we need to improve on.

Some interesting player stats;

Quoted for truth

Some interesting team stats;
  • Added goal ratio per i50. We're ranked 11th for conversion, though ahead of the curve due to outliers Suns and Bombers. We're also going at worse than our direct opponents. Our defence appears to be suffering from lack of midfield pressure to me.
  • Our DE has fallen below our direct opponent comparison for the first time this season. Stats reflect something we've all seen as obvious.
Some interesting player stats;
  • Danger ranked 3rd and Thommo 5th for contested possessions/game
  • Danger ranked equal 3rd in the AFL for tackles.
  • Ten goal Tom out-assisting Eddie Extraordinary with 11 compared to 9.
  • Goal accuracy has been updated to include non-scoring shots on goal. Eddie's accuracy drops from over 75% to just over 50%. Other notable goal accuracies include Tex 40%, Danger 40%, Charlie 24%, Wright 17%.

All those high numbers and then BAM!!! we're second to bottom for disposal efficiency.
But what scope for improvement!

Imagine how good our forward line will be when we start hitting the barn.

Just adding Douglas and Henderson for Wright and van Berlo would improve our footskills significantly.

That's interesting given some of the comments on here

Hopefully a few people questioning their eyes now.

Though I imagine it will go more like "Am I so out of touch? No, it's Champion Data who are wrong".

All those high numbers and then BAM!!! we're second to bottom for disposal efficiency.

So what does that mean for our ladder position? Could be one or two wins better off if we had better disposal. I'd say if we started games better we would play with more confidence and probably have a natural improvement of that DE (5/10%) without even changing any personnel.
Would make a considerable difference.

Douglas at 67.9% is an improvement on VB's 67.5% for the season, but not significant.

In the same games (so R1-R5), Douglas is 67.9% for 112 disp and VB was 74.2% for 66 - so Douglas had 36 ineffective touches to VB's 17.

Yep, significant.

Since we kick so much won't our disposal efficiency likely always be lower than average? Is there a separate kicking efficiency stat somewhere?

Not available publicly, but I'd love to see that. Most teams have better DE because they handball more, and I agree with you, seeing what our KE and HE is compared to other teams would be more informative.

PW did say in his AA interview that apparently Champion_Data has us as the second-highest team for missing a target under no pressure. Clearly not good enough.
