With less than a month to go until our first NAB Cup game I think we can now start the Annual pick your NAB Cup side thread.

For the record lets clear up a few things:
  • All players on the list can play that includes rookies.
  • Sides are made up of 24 players 18 starters and 6 on the bench.
  • The club has indicated that they will be going with the strongest possible line up in the first game.
  • Cousins is unlikely to play in the NAB Cup.
With that out the way, feel free to start throwing up the team you would take into the first NAB Cup game. Here is mine:

B: Newman :o Thursfield McGuane
HB: McMahon Schulz Moore
C: White Cotchin Richo
HF: Riewoldt Pattison Deledio
F: Brown Hughes Morton
R: Simmonds Tuck Foley
I: Coughlan Graham Thomson Bowden Johnson Raines

Moore, Thursfield, Newman
McMahon, McGaune, Tambling
Richo, Tuck, Deledio
Cotchin, Schulz, Brown
Morton, Hughes,J.Bowden
Simmonds, Foley, Cousins
Riewoltd,Coughlan/White, Pattison

Johnson, Thompson, Jackson, Connors, Edwards ,Raines, pettifer if fitand Polak if healthy are pretty stiff too miss out

I thought it was eight players on the bench this year. Or it might just be our game as it in Perth. I'm pretty sure I heard it somewhere.

RT how could you leave out Jackson ! He'd be one of the first picked considering the pre-season he's having.

Anyway, this is mine.

FB: Newman Thursfield McGuane

HB: Moore Rance McMahon

C: White Foley Richardson

HF: Morton Riewoldt Bowden

FF: Brown Hughes Edwards

R: Simmonds Deledio Tuck

INT: Raines Polo Putt Thomson Jackson Coughlan

Backline: Went with a mix of running defenders as well as height. Let's develop Rance by playing him in his home state and see how he goes. I think he'd relish the wide open grounds. Newman and McMahon will have a field day you'd suspect. Thursfield, Moore and McGuane will be solid as usual.

Centres: White gets a good go in the guts. He'll burn up Subi with his endurance and pace. Simmonds, Foley, Richo, Tuck and Deledio are pretty much self explanitory.

Forwards: Went with a mix of youth and experience as I'd expect this is what will happen anyway. Morton, Hughes, Riewoldt and Edwards get to show what they can do, while Brown and Bowden take care of things. I'd like to see Joel up in the forward line and presenting as an option through the midfield more this year. Similar to the Brisbane game. He's so creative he'll make things happen.

Bench: This was the toughest gig. Trying to assess who has done everything right in the pre-season as they'll be the first ones picked.

- Raines is in our best 22 when fit. Simple as that.
- Polo get's the chance to prove he is serious and back up a solid pre-season.
- Putt has gotten stronger and is a big boy. He'll be playing back-up to Simmonds as well as some time in the forward line.
- Thomson gets an oppurtunity to prove his worth.
- You can't leave out Jackson.
- Cogs is back finally !

Who's left out: Tough decisions. No doubt plenty of these boys will be rotated through the series.

- Patto, JON, Collins, Johnson, Graham, Hislop and King would be stiff. Best way to put it.
- I think we'll slowly ease the new boys into it. No rush.
- Resting are Cousins, Cotchin, Connors, Polak and Tambling. Vital that by Round 1 these guys are fit bar Polak of course.

FB: Raines Thursfield McGuane
HB: King Moore Newman
C: McMahon Tuck White
HF: Edwards Riewoldt Coughlan
FF: Morton Hughes Connors
R: Simmonds Foley Deledio

Int: Thomson, Hislop, Polo, Jackson, Pattison, Tambling,

I know we have said we will go with the strongest side but I think Richo, Brown and Bowden will all be rested. Cotchin won't play unless he is 100%.
Collins, Vickery, Schulz and Rance might also play

The oldest player in that team is Simmonds who is 30. The rest are 27 or younger.

I've got Cogs on the HFF because i can't see him being thrown into the middle straight away.

B: Polo Thursfield McGuane
HB: White Moore Tambling
C: McMahon Deledio Richardson
HF: Newman Hughes Jackson
F: Brown Reiwoldt Morton
R: Simmonds Tuck Foley

Int: Pattison Thomson King Coughlan Hislop Schulz

Gotta take plenty of running power over to Subi for a pre-season game, at least four mids and the others on the bench still mobile. I'm assuming Cotchin, Cousins and Connors aren't quite ready for rd 1 NAB Cup and playing on the rock hard ground, with Bowden and Johnson 'rested.' Pattison is probably a better choice of 2nd ruck for this game than any other alternative - he has the motor to get to more contests than any other alternative.

If I was the coach I would give the proper team a rest and play every kid I can. NAB cup means nothing so why not try the kids? especially Thompson, Hislop and a couple of prospects to take over Richo, Brown, Johnson, Simmons, Bowden etc when they all leave within next couple of years. The AFL seem harsh on playing that tatic in the NAB cup cause they want a spectacle but I would take the fine/'s to do it.

Team could look roughly like this:

B: Tambling Silvester King

HB: Raines Rance Post

C: Polo Thompson Nicholls

HF: Collins Vickery Connors

F: Nahas Hughes Gilligan

R: Graham Coughlan Hislop

Int: Putt Jackson Gourdis Browne Schulz Pettifer/Edwards last spot on bench, depending on if Petts is injured or not.

Wouldn't that be an interesting team? I'm sure I misplaced a player or too, maybe they can be in abit better positions but I did my best.
Not forgetting if you play most of your guns in the Joke Cup your not leaving much as a suprise for the real thing a month down the road.

i must say RT, that is a sweet avatar you have:thumbsu:

richmonds got a great side for this year (& the future)
good luck

How hard is this getting! Its only the NAB cup it this is still tough - can only be a good sign for our tigers! :D I know we have said that we will go in with a full strength side, but here is the team i would like to see out there, with out more senior players to start on the bench and come on when needed:

(Assuming that Cotch, Polak, Pettifer, Conners, Tambling and Cuz aren't available)-

B: Rance, Thursfield, McGuane

-Rance needs AFL exposure ASAP! Get him into it, to replace Bowden permanently. Other 2 self explanitory.

HB: Raines, Moore, Hislop/Thomson

-Raines obviously coming back from injury, we need to see where he is at and if he can hold down the small defenders role. Moore, self explanatory. Hislop/Thomson can also be used in this small defender role to test, may even swap with some of the centres.

C:
Polo, White, Jackson

-Polo has been res-igned, and we need to see if he be valuable to our midfield brigade. White for speed, and Jacko for the tag.

HF:
Coughlan, Reidwolt, Graham

- Cogs to be eased back into it to see if he can still cut it. Reidwolt, yeah. Graham changing with Simmo, we need to see where this guy is at, been on the list for a while, try him out at CHF at some point even!

F:
Morton, Hughes, Edwards

- Morton and Hughes to work in tandem to become the young Richo and Brown. We simply need these 2 to gel together...hell even isolate Hughes alone and have Morton and Edwards playing 15 metres ahead. Edwards to be goal sneak in pocket.

R:
Simmonds, Deledio, Foley

- No need for explanation.

Int: Richardson, Brown, Tuck, Newman, Gourdis, Collins
-Richo (adds experience to centre/fwd.), Brown (adds exp to centre/fwd), Tuck (adds exp to centre), Newman (adds exp to centre/back),
IF ITS GOING TO THE SHIT, BRING THE GUNS IN!

Gourdis- Time to try him... CHB, CHF... see what he can do!
Collins- Been on list for a while, give him a run in middle so he can do his stuff so we can see if he has a future.

No need for McMahon, Johnson, Schulz or King. Wanted to put Bowden in but couldn't find a spot!

RT how could you leave out Jackson ! He'd be one of the first picked considering the pre-season he's having.

.

Pfft...and the first dropped once the actual football starts...:o

FB: Newman Thursfield McGuane

HB: Moore Rance McMahon

C: White Foley Richardson

HF: Morton Riewoldt Bowden

FF: Brown Hughes Edwards

R: Simmonds Deledio Tuck

INT: Raines Polo Putt Thomson Jackson Coughlan

I like this team the best, Although I suspect Brown will be rested in favour of someone like Vickery, Nahas (if fit), Pattison or Gourdis

FB- Newman Thursfield McGuane
HB- Raines Moore Rance
C- White Deledio Tambling
HF- Morton Riewoldt Gourdis
FF- Edwards Hughes Putt
F- Patto Tuck Foley

Bench- Thommo, Hislop, Vickery, Coughlan, Collins, Polo , Jackson, Post

If Cotchin Is not injured and good to go then thrown him in the mix somewhere same with Connors

B: Newman - Thursfield - Moore
HB: McMahon - McGuane - Tambling
C: Richo - Deledio - Jackson
HF: White - Patto - Brown
F: Morton - Hughes - Riewoldt

1R: Simmonds - Tuck - Foley

Int: Coughlan - Thomson - Polo - Graham - Raines - Rance

- None of us want Richo to play, but he always does.
- Thats a pretty tall line-up but I think thats how we will go. I left Schulz out because of height issue.
- I'd like to see Hislop play as well.
- Couldn't fit Edwards in.
- Cotchin and Connors to miss the first week.

Edwards and Hislop unlucky. Connors, Cotchin and Cousins all out due to "interupted pre-season. Will be right for round 1".

This is what is so exciting about this year, the fact that there'll be big competition for the remaining few spots especially when you've got those calibre of players resting :thumbsu:

1st nab cup game i think should be something like

Raines Will Hislop
Jordi Moore Polo
Collins Cogs Edwards
Bling Riewoldt Thomson
Morton Hughes Connors

Pattison Foley Tuck
Int - Suges Mcguane Schulz Jackson Vickery Graham

than rotate richo cousins cotchin deledio simmonds etc in and out of that team.

I do not want to see close to a full strengthed side in the Nab Cup

B: Newman Thursfield McGuane
HB: JMAC Kelvin Rance
C: Richo Deledio Tambling
HF: Cotchin Riewoldt Bowden
F: Brown Hughes Morton
FOL: Simmonds Foley Tuck

INT: Pattison, Couglan, Thomson, Sugar, Edwards, White

EMER: Jackson, Schultz ,King

I would assume most of the new boys won't play maybe vickery ... petifer cousins polak won't play...
it is a hard line up to put together... people like jackson miss out

the good thing about it being hard is that they have to play good games to stay in the team... i mean i would say putt and gourdis will be looking for games along with angus graham an robie nahas, collins and hislop.. there is not enough room for the depth we are starting to get

B: Newman Thursfield McGuane
HB: Rance Moore Hislop
C: Richo Deledio Tambling
HF: Thomson Riewoldt White
F: Brown Hughes Morton
FOL: Simmonds Foley Tuck

INT: Jackson, Coughlan, Pattison, Schulz, Edwards, Gourdis

Left out blokes I think will be struggling for fitness.
Give the Goo a go!

FB: Newman Thursfield Moore

HB: Bowden Rance McMahon

C: White Coughlan Deledio

HF: Polo Richardson Thomson

FF: Brown Riewoldt Morton

R: Simmonds foley Tuck

INT: Raines hislop Patto Jackson

Have Bowden playing spare man in defence. Think we should play richo at CHF this year, enough quality up the ground already. Rotate deledio and Brown in the midfield and playing out of the goal square to give them a rest and break any tags.

in best 22 id have...

Cousins, Cotchin, Conors, Vickery and tambling

FOR

raines, hislop, patto, polo and jackson

unluckiest: Shultz and mcguane but with some injuries to key posistion players theyll get 5-10 games.

luckiest: Thomson, we have brought him over for a reason and with so much pressure behind him he better perform and mcmahon, with raines and king breathing down his neck

They've said they want to pick a strong team for round one of the NAB Cup, which is fair enough cos you want to win the first one. I wouldn't have any of the old blokes though, or anyone coming off injury, on a rock-hard, massive Subi in what's likely to be stinking temperatures (is it a day or night game?). So no Richo, no Simmo, no Brown, no Bowden, no Johnson, no Cousins, no Tambling, no Connors, no Pettifer, no JON and no Cogs, for me. The good thing is, we can still put in a reasonable side:

Thursfield Moore Newman
Schulz McGuane McMahon
Jackson Deledio Polo
White Riewoldt Edwards
Morton Hughes Collins
Patto Tuck Foley
Graham Thomson Hislop Rance Raines King

This would b my line up remembering that cousins probs wont play

B: Newman Thusty Raines
HB:Tambling Moore Mcmahon
C: Richo Foley Cotchin
HF: White Schultz Bowden
F: Morton Riewoldt Brown
FOL:Simmonds Tuck Lids
INT:Johnson Thompson Polo Edwards Rance Conners

close to full strength team

FB: Newman thursfield mcguane
HB: Raines Moore Rance
C: Mcmahon Tuck Cotchin
HF: Connors Reiwoldt White
FF: Schulz Hughes Morton
R: Simmo Lids Foley

INT: Coughlan, Johnson/THomson/hislop/polo(2 of these 4), jackson, Graham/pattison, Gourdis/silvester/tambling/JON/king(1 of these)

really the bench could come from any of the ones listed.

coughlan and jackson are definites.
toss a coin for that last position, depends on what they want (speed v height)
johnson may be rested. therefore comes to who is training better out of thommo, hislop and polo.
same for graham/pattison.

richo, brown and bowden prob wont play, but team can be rearranged if they do.

otherwise....
a more youthful side would prob look like this.
FB: Raines silvester king
HB: rance moore tambling
C: jackson tuck white
HF: edwards reiwoldt connors
FF: morton hughes gourdis
R: pattison cotchin thomson

int: coughlan, newman, graham, hislop, JON, polo

putt, vickery, polak, post, collins, gilligan, nahas, pettifer not ready yet.

not a bad youth team. future looking bright.

mcguane, schulz, richo, johnson, brown, bowden, axel, deledio, mcmahon, thursfield, simmonds, cousins to all be rested(more than half of our first string team.)

Would like to see all of the older guys rested for the NAB Cup Round 1 Team. Let the young guys leadership group direct the team onfield. Will give the players that will be together for the next 5-6 years a chance to play some football.

FB: Raines Thursfield McGuane
HB: Rance Moore Tambling
C: Newman Thomson White
HF: Morton Reiwoldt Jackson
FF: Edwards Hughes Hislop
R: Pattison Delidio Foley
int: Cotchin, Coughlan, JON, Graham, Gourdis, Polo

Newman - play as a defensive winger role. Can oversee the defesive unit and the midfield from there.
Raines - get some gametime into him as an accountable BP.
Rance - give him a look at the rebounding role with Bowden rested.
JON - if he is fit get him out there. Would've played VFL with afew of these guys last year so should have confidence.
Hughes - Needs as much time at FF as possible.
Hislop - If we're going to try and turn him into a FP may as well play him there. Brown rested.
Pattison - Simmonds rested. Graham a run as 2nd ruck.
Thomson - Tagging role. If Palmer not playing then run with Haselby. Johnson rested.
Cotchin and Coughlan - easing them into it rotating off the bench.
Gourdis - would just like to get a look at him playing some seniors.
Polo - rotating as the tagger/HFF with Jackson and Thomson.

Thursfield, McGuane and Moore need more time to play with who-ever else fills the other 3 positions before season starts.

There's a lot of quality in the midfield and with extra interchange players we should be able to rotate and rest players according to the conditions.

With-out Richo and Browny on the field we are missing some firepower, but those playing all need to kick goals in game conditions. May as well give them some responsibility now.
