With the newest class of 2014 to be inducted in June, I thought id make this thread. One of the big concerns surrounding the games history is the Victorian domination of the not just the history but the Hall of Fame, which while administered by the AFL, does appear to be somewhat negligent in its view of football history outside the state.

So who deserves a gig and isnt already in the Hall of Fame, and why

Photos with the elderly daughters of the old player in question with the players who are alive don't have the same effect

This is an issue I addressed in a recent article, but if I was pushed to name a top 20 most egregious omissions from the HOF (pre-1956) from among the many potential candidates I listed, it would be as follows (alphabetical order):

Jack Baker (Carlton-Player)
Bill Bateman (Fremantle-Pioneer)
Dick Condon (Collingwood-Player)
Jack Conway (Carlton-Pioneer)
Jim Deane (South Adelaide-Player)
Jack 'Snowy' Hamilton (North Adelaide/Subiaco-Player)
William Hammersley (VIC-Pioneer)
Con Hickey (VIC-Admin)
George 'Staunch' Owens (East Perth-Player/Umpire)
Tom Leahy (West/North Adelaide-Player)
Fred McGinis (Hobart/Melbourne-Player)
Ian McKay (North Adelaide-Player)
Hugh McLean (Geelong-Player)
Bernie Naylor (South Fremantle-Player)
James Thompson (VIC-Pioneer)
Ron Todd (Collingwood/Williamstown-Player)
James 'JJ' Trait (VIC-Umpire)
Percy Trotter (Fitzroy/East Fremantle-Player)

Bernie Naylor was one Id heard of, mainly as a foe in a short history id wrriten about East fremantle.

From the Western Mail (Supplement), Aug 6th, 1953

From Wikipedia:
  • South Fremantle premiership side 1947–48, 1950, 1952–54
  • Leading goalkicker (WANFL) 1946–48, 1952–54
  • Most goals in a single WA(N)FL game: 23 (vs Subiaco, 1953)
  • Most goals in a single WA(N)FL season: 167 (1953)
The Adelaide Mail reported on August 8th, 1953 that Naylor had kicked 23 goals in a game against Subiaco. His WA Hall of Champions page says that he held the Australian goalkicking record for 15 years, and his 23 goals is still the record in a top level game. he kicked 1034 goals from 195 games at 5.3 goals per game. He had was WAFL leading goalkicker 6 times, 5 of those being centuries.

I reckon they should have a veteran's committee on the Hall of Fame for players pre WW2 who could elect one player per year.

A player you missed out from your great list is Harry sharpe, 8 time premiership player with East Fremantle...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampson_Hosking

A self-confessed dirty thug who won 2 Magaries, played in multiple Port premierships, coached Port to three flags and West Torrens to a flag to boot. Also sat on the bench at age 48 and is thus the oldest SANFL player of all time.

Pre-ww2 footy in general needs a really good history written. There are literally thousands of stories to be told and 'Shine' Hosking is one of them.

John Abley - Port Adelaide full back in their golden era - 7 premierships - 23 state games for SA - three times All Australian. Played full back at a time when every side had the power forward up front.

Neville Hayes - Port Adelaide half back of same era - 8 premierships - 21 state games. The magpies played stifling defense in those days and while the ball players - get remembered (rightly) Obst, Cahill, Motley, Potter, Boyd - these two defenders held the opposition to low scores.
