Goldust's thought for the day!To those calling for the culling of Coach Walllace I offer this.
Two nights ago I watched a magnificent movie on DVD called "We are Marshall". If you are in to US football or sports movies at all, I thoroughly recommend you rent - of if not buy - this beauty of a movie. To cut to the chase (it's a true story), the film revolves around the Marshall University football team of 1970-71 in West Virginia. Tragedy befalls the team one game out from the end of the 1970 seasson when a plane crashes on the way back fromagame against East Carolina, killing 35 or more players, all but one member of the coaching staff, training staff and boosters (those who financially support the university). In all 70 people died. The university struggles with deciding whether to revive the football program for the following season and eventually does. The search begins for a coach and the university's first choice, as well as second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, even seventh choice replacements all turn down the job. Marshall eventually settles on an unknown, unconventional, yet highly charismatic man in Jack Lengyel from the relatively unknown University of Wooster (Ohio) to lead the college's football program. An odd choice, but at the time, the only candidate willing to take on the job of coaching such a depleted outfit.
This is not a moview review...check it out if you want to know the ending.
But my point is, we're we to part company Wallace at the end of this season, who the f*** would take us on? We have Buckley's hope and none of luring a half decent coach in the circumstances we find ourselves in.
I have seen some of the names bandied around for potential openings. The likes of Chris Bond, John Longmire and Peter Sumich - all highly regarded - aren't going to take on a basket case like us and pin their long term aspirations on rebuilding us in to a premiership contender. Neale Daniher...nup....he'd had enough of losing this year. Sheedy...I doubt it and the value of a coach as old as Sheeds would be debatable!! Let's face facts, we are like Marshall in 71...no one wants the job. Right now we're looking at our own version of Jack Lenygel coming on board were Wallace to go. Liken it to the last time we sought a coach pre-Wallace. We were left with a choice between Danny Frawley and Tony Shaw
!!!! That was the extent of it.So it is one thing to call for Wallace's head....but consider the alternative! What, Pagan?
Personally, I say let's see how things pan out at the end of the five years. It's finacially responsible and it's what we got the man for. Even the most disappointed of us would have realised that this is where we would eventually be at - it came two years later than anticipated.
Right now, we have no alternative!
