It's the same for all teams

They should play pretty much straight away

They would have been able to do all of their running and weights stuff.

It's just the footy skills, structures, game plan, team work, match fitness etc that will be missing.

We don't have any of that stuff anyway

The same reason there should be no preseason games, straight into the real stuff.

The issue is that all teams are faced with the exact same situation as us ie. season on hold. Which means that whatever gains we have for our younger lads to build on their strength/fitness, there is likely the same amount of gains for other young lads from the other teams.

I think it really boils down to how hard the individual players train during this lockdown period. The team which has the most hard workers during this period is likely to advance and the team of slackers will go backwards.
So we’re screwed by that metric.

Except for the fact we'd probably have the #1 or #2 draft pick after this year

This is a terrible time for it to happen.

We'd have been much better with this happening a year we were going to finish 7th to 10th yet again

IIRC the last time we went through a rebuilding phase was around the time of the GCS entry? (or was it GWS). Nevertheless we lost on getting prime positions for the draft in those years as well.

While history may not look back on us kindly with no flags since 1998, there is reasons (excuses?) as to how we fell into this hole.

At least the Club has been able to place itself in positions to contest/win a flag.

Not a lot of benefits for our club during this shutdown. One major positive I see is that with the mass sacking of many top line assistant coaches we are now in a prime position to totally revamp our assistant coaches/strategy etc with quality. This will benefit us big time as now the top line Vic assistants will be knocking on our door. The major downside is that our club will not cut or trade players as aggressively as they would have at the end of the year. Tbh we still need to be very aggressive in moving on players such as Gibbs, Mackay, Kelly, Hartigan, Atkins, Knight, Poholke, Gallucci, Wilson etc. Club also needs to look at Lynch and Walker and whether there is any benefit in keeping them on our list. A 2nd rounder for Lynch would alleviate salary cap and i would pay out walker 1 year early as his best is well and truly behind him. In regards to BCrouch I would look at trading him instead of offering him a long term deal on very good money. I feel we will get a decent first rounder for him. My attitude is get the pain out of the way as quick as possible, be aggressive in the trade and draft next 2 years and start building something sustainable.
