Yawn.. just about all over boys
So we bowl the Indians out yesterday and they come in for team talk on the innings at hand. You don't need to be Einstein to realise that we will not bat out 5 sessions. A day five pitch with foot marks for the 3 spinners always meant we would struggle to last the required time to draw the test. We needed to put on approx 250 and hope for some early wickets to make the Indians to nervous to push for the win. I would of sent Haddin and Warner in with the mind set to throw the bat at everything. Followed by Starc and Siddle. A quick fire 150 would see us in a decent proposition for the draw. For the coach and management to hope that defensive cricket was going to see anything but the place we are in now, screams to me that Arthur has far to much confidence in the current line up and not enough respect for the bowling attack and conditions. Also Clarke bad back or not, as captain should of walked out late yesterday afternoon and seen the team through the last overs. Not sent an average and inexperienced batsman to the lions. Arthur is paid to coach and Clarke to captain. Both failed to grasp the situation at hand. Surely there has to be a review on the management:( of this team???

Couple of horrible decisions which will only hasten the inevitable.

Anyone know what's happened to Kurtis Patterson? Scored that century on debut last year for NSW, off memory the youngest to score a century on debut in the Shield, and heard nothing about him this season.

Pretty sure Clarke couldn't bat because he had been off the field too long. Otherwise I agree that we needed a more positive midset. hughes killed it yesterday and put us in a position to save the match but today it seems it was block-blocky-blocky cricket which meant even though we have eaten up a lot of overs we don't have the kind of lead we need to make a match of it.

From cricinfo it looks like he is playing in U19 and U23 teams. Played a T20 on boxing day and scored 4. Not exactly banging down the door by the looks of things.

Interestingly, he's only played the one shield game.

Patterson hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire at sub levels, not sure about grade cricket but his u19 season with Aus wasn't flattering at all.

I know I'm the traditional batsman hating quick bowler from way back, but it really is time batsmen started to toughen up and not throw their wickets away so easily. The past season or so in all levels of the game here in Australia I am continually witnessing top order batsmen getting out to ridiculous shots (lack of application) only to see tail enders walk in, bat sensibly, and make runs .. and plenty of them.

Of course, I blame the plethora of limited over cricket as the main reason this happens, but there may be other reasons. I am so bemused when you see a batsman not apply himself, get out to a ridiculous shot selection, then come back and blame the pitch.

Sure there is always the odd time the ball explodes off the pitch or a batsman is beaten by an unplayable ball, but 99% of the time the bowler doesn't get a batsman out, the batsman gets himself out. All the bowler does is place the field and bowl where he hopes the batsman will make a mistake, elementary cricket.

You always hear batsmen moaning about "the ball not coming on". By this, they mean they have to get their heads down and play each ball on its' merits, rather than just blast away with T20 shots on a featherbed. One batsman at my local club complained to me "the wicket is two paced". I asked him, "Have you ever considered the bowler is the one varying the pace, not the wicket?". He looked at me blankly. If batting didn't come easy, he didn't want to know.

So many times I got wickets with the Ian Botham "sucker ball", the short pitched slower ball that a batsman can pull to the boundary with ease, and then follow it up with a slightly fuller ball with heat, only see the batsman try to repeat the shot and get himself in a tangle because he didn't treat the ball on it's merits.

Earlier this season at my local club, I saw a number 10 & 11 batsman break an all time 10th wicket A grade partnership of 95. Batsmen were talking about how remarkable it was in view of how difficult the pitch was. I reminded them the pitch didn't look too difficult when numbers 10 & 11 were batting, and that they could only break that record because the top order batting allowed them the time to do it.

The reason for this post? On the weekend, my club lost their semi final after having been minor premier. Chasing a mediocre total of 139, they responded to be 8/45, then 9/60. The last 2 batsmen added 75 runs for the last wicket only to fall 4 runs short. Did batsmen hang their heads in shame? Of course not.

Time for batsmen to return to school and learn the art of of batting, before it's too late.

You are so right. How many times have you heard a batsman justify his dismissal by claiming he was playing his natural game? Play the conditions!!

Yep, that is in essence what I'm trying to say. Nothing wrong with spanking a bad ball early for a 4 or 6 if the ball warranted it, but too many batsmen try to force the pace before they've played themselves in, got used to the conditions, etc. When tailender go in, they are more concerned with survival rather than forcing the pace, and that is why they have been having so much success of late.

I'd like to see batsmen revert back to the old Greg Chappell approach of only playing in the V until he was comfortable with the pace of the pitch. It seemed to work for Greg :)

So would I but as long as T20 is around, I feel the basic skills will diminish even further than they have.
