it's a bit silly that the outcome of this English 'leg' of the series is somewhat irrelevant, given it all happens again later this year in Australia -- where the winner there will hold on to the urn for 4 years. What idiot was in charge of that scheduling! normally you get at a good 18 months to revel in Ashes glory

interesting to see after 66 Ashes series, Australia has won 31 and England 30. Unfortunately reckon it'll be even heading into the 'decider' in Australia

FFS Watson is worse than Ellis.

Australia all-rounder Shane Watson picked up a lower leg injury on day one of the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.

Watson will be worked on by team physio Alex Kountouris overnight on Wednesday to try and get him right to bowl again in the second innings.

The opener was free enough to continue fielding and to come out and bat.

However, his long history of breaking down means any niggle must be treated with concern.

Watson (0-7) appeared to pull up short during the last of his four overs and didn't return to the attack.

"There's a little bit of a niggle but he's just going to see Alex and I'm presuming he's going to bowl in the second innings," said coach, Darren Lehmann.

Disappointing we couldn't consolidate with the bat after getting the job done with the ball.

Didn't bowl particularly great with far too many boundary balls but we bowled enough wicket taking deliveries and the Poms keen on rewarding them whenever they presented.

Really happy they gave Agar a game. A bold move designed to usher in a long term player.

As for the batting - Watson and Cowan (agree he should be goneski) just wasted their wickets going too hard at the balls that they didn't need to. Clarke got a ripper and Rogers was a bit unlucky for mine.

Not really happy with the LBW set up (yeah, I'm a batsman). To me LBW needs to be plumb, PLUMB. Without doubt smashing into the stumps. I don't trust hawkeye as being perfect so any ball that is merely clipping off/leg/bails (according to hawkeye) could still well be missing and any benefit of doubt should be given to the batsmen. None of this umpires call shit. Just not out - whether originally given out or not. Ball should be smashing into middle or at least taking substantially the inside of off or leg....not just a chance to clip the stumps.

As it is the Aussies got the bad end of 2 LBW reviews. Anderson (I think) looked more likely out than Rogers yet gets given not out and upheld as umpires call on review. Then Rogers, which appeared dubious, gets given out and upheld as umpires call.
 
Despite the dismissal, I liked the look of Rogers. Looked composed under pressure with the ability to build a traditional openers innings. I really hope he kicks on and has a great series.

Rogers looked fairly unlucky with is LBW decision.

Cowan pissed his wicket away, and that was vintage Watson. Special K to bat 3 next test?

Agree with you in regards to our bowling. We were sharp with our catches aswell which helps, didnt grass our normal 2-3 chances per innings.

Lets hope Hughes and Smith build a decent partnership
 
I was watching on GEM and getting annoyed at the white score bar at the bottom of the screen, then every time I got bored in the England innings and flipped channels for a few mins, every time I came back the was a wicket! Have watched the "lowlights" of the Aussie innings, pretty woeful stuff, here's hoping Hughes and Smith can protect the tail for a while...
