Not convinced on Bailey but then it's not like there is anyone banging the door down for a gig...

I wonder if we will ever be able to play our best bowling attack again. I think I saw a headline that had Johnson bowling at the English barsmans throats. The guy doesn't have a good bouncer...the English are too disciplined to get out to him. Not looking forward to the test match next week...

never thought the day would come. End of an absolute era. 1989!
a nation of 1.3 billion people will be in mourning in a few days time.
undoubtedly the best cricketer i've seen in my time. very fortunate to see him play live in India on numerous occasions. Each time he pushed a single the crowd responded like it was a last-ball six to win the match. Never seen such devotion. Crazy! The boxing day test around 2002 was pretty memorable too, when he scored 150 out of 200 or something

Anyone else see this? Apparently the youngest player to represent the NSW second 11 since Doug Walters.

"Jake Doran, a 16-year-old, batsman from New South Wales, has been chosen to play against England in their tour match in Alice Springs that follows the first Test in Brisbane. Doran has been named in the 12-man squad for the Cricket Australia Chairman's XI and the former Test spinner Michael Beer will captain the side for the two-day match"

I hope he does well.

A 15 year old from Broken Hill did the same back in 1986 against the touring Englishmen, though I think he represented Country NSW. Jeff Vaughan struggled for the rest of his career to achieve the heights set for him by the dreaded word "potential", though he did represent South Australia on several occasions.

Yes, I did see that the other day. NSW boy… destined for higher honours.

Sachin edging towards a fairytail end to his career. The way the match is panning out, it's unlikely India will bat twice. Currently 71no…... Personally, I would have liked him to score a duck… not from a vindictive perspective, simply because he's India's Bradman and the symmetry would have been nice.

So, who would you prefer: Kallis or Tendulkar? Someone said to me the other day their careers with the bat are almost line ball.

That's a bloody hard question. I would probably take Tendulkar as a batsman, but Kallis for the overall package. Just think Tendulkar had the ability to go through the gears better than Kallis and could take a game apart quicker if needed.

Still remember his knock in Adelaide, late 90s I think. He had been nicking the ball when playing through the covers so he put the shot away. Peeled off a 150 or 200 that day and didn't play anything through the covers. His self control was just amazing as the Aussies continually tempted him out there.

Mitch was talked up massively going into this game... only problem is was for the ball.

Given Mitch and Haddin both made runs you can be sure the ball wasn't do an awful lot. I can appreciate that if you just don't have the talent you aren't going to succeed at test level but the shots players were getting out to were largely just bad shots. We give away wickets way to easily...

When you have lower order bats making runs easily there ain't many demons in the wicket. England should bat for a couple of days on that form guide.
Only positive to come out of the day is that even though I don't think much of Johnson as a test cricketer, he usually bowls ok if his batting is on song.

Whether people want to hear this or not, I'm afraid it's the way it is. Australia's obsession with the truncated form of the game has destroyed batsmanship at Test level. Our guys seem to think they have to play at every ball, a neurotic compulsion developed from the likes of 20/20.

FFS guys, you ARE allowed to let balls go outside the off stump. Broad must have thought it was his birthday yesterday, just hang one out there and wait for the batsman to chase it.

Mitchell Johnson has his good bowling karma going following on from his good batting karma yesterday, and Nathan Lyon has been very good.
