I have tried on 4 seperate occasions. And despite being a massive Tolkien fan, I just cannot get past Chapter 2.

It's not for everyone with the jumping about to different places/times.

But there's lots of carnage and mega-gods running around so i prefer it to LoTR and The Hobbit.

It's a must though to get the full scope of Tolkien's imagination and crafting of an epic tale.

Exactly, the OP's question suggests that there was time before time began. Time began with creation / the big bang / whatever you want to call it. The world did not begin by a creation in time, but by a creation of time.
